Grrrr  Yeah it has to be longer than the one at Freedom, because there is no way to fit all those windows in there. Back to the autoCAD board...

OK so 70x23 and assume 2.5' roof overhang

Thanks for the PDF.

I wonder how accurate that is, it shows Main St. as being 60' wide when it was 43'5" wide http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/el/dwg/75-10788.gif

Sanborn 'streets' include the area for side walks and such.  So for something like downtown Waterloo, IA, it's basically the distance between buildings.

<civil engineer hat> To build on what Jason is saying, the area shown on the Sanborn maps is the Right of Way (ROW) boundaries.  Within the ROW everything from sidewalk to parkway to the street itself is included, not just the pavement surface.  </civil engineer hat>

I have a difficult time seeing 23' wide, based on the photos up thread, particularly the color image with the MoW truck parked near the building.  I could get to 20' easily.
I'm surprised that the Erie wouldn't have a standard for wood depots, much like the Milwaukee or NP.  I would think the Erie Historical Assoc. would have some/all of these standards.

If I used 23' wide meaning the roof, the building itself ends up being 18' wide.  Erie had no standard stations at all. I have the set of books called "Next station will be..." that shows every station down the line. Plus where I live the Erie mainline split in two and then came back together. One line was the Atlantic & Great Western, the other was the Cleveland & Mahoning. Some of the stations were from those railroads.

If I use the 70x23 (65x18 main box) everything (windows doors) seems to fit in the space.

I didn't realize you were using the roof as a measurement.  The 18' x 65' makes much more sense to me.

I took the outer line of the Sanford Maps drawing as the roof, and the inner line as the building. The inner rectangle scales to approx. 70 x 23; the outer is approx. 78 x 30.

I'm not really keen on how these numbers work out, either; by eye, it looks much closer to 18 x 60-65.

Might the outer line be the platform/pad the station is sitting on, rather than the edge of the roof?

A bit of a stretch, I know...

FWIW, just to satisfy my curiosity, I compared the Sanford map with Chris' Pennsylvania-Ohio Power & Light map. The former is red, superimposed over the latter in green. There seems to be fair agreement between the two in terms of the station's size, if not its placement. It's also interesting to see how very different the track alignments are between the two maps.

I suppose I can accept the size now, just have to draw it over and over till it looks right to me. Want to eventually have it laser cut. Then I have to decide if I should reverse the whole thing to fit my layout better.

For fun here it is in 1950

Really diggin' the coal silos behind the station.  :D

I used old layout turnout linkages to get the rural side of this layout's turnouts linked. And then I started on the other side building turnouts:

It figures, I go on vacation and miss all the good stuff. Chris the layout is really starting to come together, I'm looking forward to following your progress on this HCD.

Got this curve installed and the straight away on the right is done. Now I flipped the layout around to work on the far curve. The curves are elevated with masking tape strips. Once I get the mains up and running and tested I will install the backdrop.

This is the track that will run off the layout to staging, there will also be an industry in this corner. I wanted to track to follow the curve of the mainline. So I tacked down a piece of flex that was spaced an equal distance from the main.

Then I traced the rail heads and added straight lines off of that. I will use this as my turnout template:

And about 20min later:

So instead of a straight diverging route it is about a 16" radius.
