So I think we're going to call that loop "Free Return" because it is made up of the old curve modules that these new ones are replacing.  It won't cost anything to use them, it's a return loop; "Free Return".  :P
I used to have a 5 track staging loop, but donated that to another group that had a better need for it.

Eventually, (get ready for this!) I plan to build another 4 more curves, which will replace the "Free return" curves again!  The reason is that those curves are small and heavy, which means they take about twice as much effort to setup (and add half as much 'stuff' to the layout), as the new curves will.

When that time comes, yes I think 1 through track and 3 staging tracks will be the way to go.

Such an impressive layout. Any plans for Free-moNebraska to visit the East Coast? Would love to be able to see your work in person at one of our bigger train shows sometime.

Unfortunately, Free-mo seems to remain a scarce form of the hobby in the urbanized NE.

My little brain keeps reading that as "Free Return Trajectory"....  guess I've read Apollo 13 too many times...  :ashat:

Thanks.  We were invited to that big show out there once.  One of these days I do wish to go.  Its also one of my goals to look east more often in general.
I'm starting to see a few new module builds popping up throughout the colonies, so hopefully it's starting to grow!

Yes, I intended that as well.  :D   I'm quite the fan of Apollo program myself.

Yes, the curves really do look amazing, nice work. This is where N scale shines. I also like your choice of equipment, nothing like the fast Super to show off the flowing curves... :D
Would you mind identifying the different radii shown on each photo?
Thanks, Otto K.

Is that 'flat spot' in the curve really needed?   IIRC the FreeMo wants that for different modules to connect, but if those two modules are the only way it will ever be used then it seems superfluous to put a straight section there, and it does break up the look (IMHO) (but not too badly tho).

These curves are inspirational.

I don't know what I'm gonna do with that inspiration. But I'm inspired.

"It too will pass." :P

That is very cool.  And I do like the lightweight construction method.  8)

Thanks Otto.

I have 4 curve modules in this test set up.  The last photo showing the rear of the train is the largest curve, "Hillside", a 30 degree 106" radius curve.
On the other side of the 5 foot straight section is a 50r60  (60 degrees of 50" radius curve).  The straight and that 50r60 are a permanent set as the fill on that section crosses the endplate.
The rest are stand-alone curves with true Free-moN endplates (answering @ednadolski s question on why they have the required straight bit).  The middle curve with the rugged outcropping is a 77r30, and the last curve on the end is a 41r60.

This weekend we did a trial load-up to make sure everything fits.

Someone is excited to get part of her basement back.

We drew a chalk boundary for the trailer dimensions.  Took a couple tries, but we got them to fit....

...just barely!

That leaves us 4 days to get a base layer of scenery to cover up the moon/ash/gray on the new modules.  I think we can handle it.
Then we'll be ready to hit the road and close the gap on peteski.

Oh, I also decided to grab the West O Street bridges.

I've been procrastinating on painting these because I wanted to add archer rivets.  Today I decided I might as well just paint them now.  I can always add rivets and repaint later.

I gave them a nice scrub with a toothbrush, primed them, and sprayed the main colors.

Three days to go!

Yesterday I laid down a base coat of scenery on 3 of the 9 modules and just about finished up the bridges.

This one is a nice curve that leads into Roca.  I have a box of super trees we'll take and plant once things are set up.

And this one featuring the present day site of a 1894 train wreck caused by sabotage.

I'm really quite happy with how the bridges came out!
A few more touch-up's and they'll be set.

Can't wait to see trains on these now!

Only 1 and a half modules covered yesterday.  Still 4 and a half to go.
