Continuing from the weekend update last week, I was able to 'plant' the removable overpass and get started on scenery!

I ended up digging post holes and used hot-glue to embed styrene tubes with internal diameter just larger than the overpass pilings diameter. I re-built the pilings to extend into the holes, rather than being cut to height from level ground.  Works and looks perfect!

And now, for a grand magic trick!

The overpass:  So often a part of our modern landscape but yet so seldom modeled.  Really well done.  Looking forward to seeing the finished scene.

I'm back around to the Yard Extension project.  This time, focusing on the two bridges that cross West O Street just beyond the yard lead.

First up, the older Burlington Route bridge on the Eastbound line. (left)

I spent the afternoon cutting and squaring ends on rectangle strips.  I manually measured/cut the deck and sides this time, rather than firing up the Cameo.

After the first cross-members are in place, I glued some scrap strips to work as a guide to keep the remaining cross-members aligned side to side.

With the guides for alignment, I was able to eyeball the spacing quite easily.

All that tedious work, yet this is the only part of the cross-members that will be visible.

Next, I got started on the side ribs.  One side done, then realized I'm out of supplies.  Off to the hobby shop tomorrow I'll be.

Yes, we'll be there.  And again for the NMRA Convention in 2019 for a small multi-group set up.

So how many scale miles is that "small" set up going to be?  Seeing that plan makes me want to leave my stuff home and just come run on yours.

I don't see a problem there. Yes, only the ends of the cross-members are visible with everything in place, but to me there would be twice as much work trying to evenly space smaller bits on each side if you made the center solid and only modeled what showed. Good technique with a good result.

In Portland, the four groups (Silicon Valley, N-Land [Southern Cal], Pacific NW and Minnesota) had 8000 sq ft of space.  We  had approximately 20 scale miles of main line, and took anywhere from 45 minutes to 1.25 hours to make a round trip around the combined layout.  Here is a "hyperspeed" trip around the layout

Mark - for this summer, do you know how much space FreeMo-N will have.  I saw the info on the convention site, and it looks like a very long and narrow hallway to set up in.  Only saw mention of N-Track, no FreeMoN.  I am still planning on bringing SV Station and San Felipe (can also do Effet), if we are a go for setup.

Yes, we'll be in KC too, partnering with the Minnesota group and several solo Free-moNsters in the area.

That's just a teaser config one of the PNW guys mocked up.  I believe it's a little over double the size of Portland!

Awesome! I think they'll have more layout space elsewhere in the hotel; we have 60% of that hallway. I left plenty of room for you to join us extending that bottom run!
