Weekend Update 2/2/14

For anyone who may be interested in southeastern U.S. railroading, I am messing around with different products to represent kudzu.

Here's the best results yet.  Cut me a little slack, because this "kudzu" is still wet with adhesive, and I haven't really tried to manipulate it into its final form.  This is just an experiment at this point: leaf flock over poly fiber.  If it still looks good when it dries, I'll start adding climbing vines on the trestle and abutments, as well as the dense growth on the hill.  I may even add trees buried in the stuff!

Don't forget you can stick stumps and various forms (shack frames, old trucks, etc) underneath so the Kudzu Zombie Horde can be consuming the man-made and more than just mountains.

And ASMI ground foam has great colors and fuller textures, so your layout doesn't have to look like a Woodland Scenicks Wonderland.

John built this up working only from photos of the actual station. We (mostly Frank) found pics in Triumph I and Pennsylvania Railroad Facilities Volume Nine: Allegheny Division.
We were trying to figure out what the two doors on the end were. We think they may have been bathrooms, male and female.

Got a promotion at work and haven't had much time to work on my layout for almost the past 3 months.  I know, gotta keep my priorities straight.  But this weekend I finally got back to working on the river edge again.  Here are a few shots of this weekends progress.  I left some space between the rock formation and rock debris to allow for bushes and trees that will cover this area.  I'm now just about 2/3rd's of the way down putting down the rock debris along the river banks. 

Please send feedback my way if you think there is anything, in regards to rock placement, that you would change or if you think it doesn't look realistic.  Even though I've been working on this layout for almost the past 2 years, I still consider myself very much a beginner and always seeking direction.








Also, over the holidays I picked up a few Atlas CSX 8-40CW's.  Look and run great!

that was my trains for the weekend. Deal of the Day though, Picked up a soundtraxx Micro, Heavy Steam......FOR $10.  Now I gotta decide if it's going to go in the A-4 or the W-3.

My guess would be that the C424s were for the SP&S.  They showed up in the NP yards in Spokane, Pasco, and Tacoma, the GN yard in Spokane, and possibly in GN's Seattle yard, so could be used by non-SP&S modellers.

I suppose all progress is progress, so:

I went to Timonium yesterday. I picked up the VRE set on an impulse buy. I also met Pete and Ed and decided to buy a loop just so I could run the trains I have. So my accomplishment for the weekend: A loop sitting on my work bench so I can actually see my trains run.

David, congrats on the promotion! Nice to see some progress on the layout. Love those rocks  . Are you thinking of making the stream with some fast gradient, or more of a slow and deeper looking? If the former you might want to try placing some larger rocks in the stream bed.  There is a recent thread on water making that has some great ideas for the water. https://www.therailwire.net/forum/index.php?topic=31913.0

Atlas kaolin & 33k gal tank cars for $6 a piece? IMRC covered hoppers and an Atlas NE-6 for $5? Yes sir. I'm glad I brought some cash.

You may feel like a beginner, but you put many professionals to shame with your work! My only recommendation would be to get a good DSLR and Helicon Focus software, so you can capture better images of your stunning scenery.

They're destined for the 60s-era Minnekota, which is short for the Minneapolis & Dakotas, a fictional regional running from the Twin Cities to its western most locale of Billings, MT, reached by way of Rapid City, SD with too many to count branches into the plains to generate ag traffic.  The Minnkota will be an all non-EMD confused and wild stepchild of the GN and NP.

THIS is exactly why you dont find deals at shows anymore. The vendors and club members walk around all on Friday and buy anything that is less than full retail. *IF* you find a deal, 95% of the time its the crap nobody wants.
