Early intermodal NYC and Milw Flexi-Van now out

The Flexi-Van that Bryan referred to earlier last year is now out. www.nscalekits.com

These skeleton cars were used by NYC and Milw [and a limited number of other roads including IC, and Sou] as an attempt to get containerization going in 1958. They were used in intermodal consists, and latterly also as head and rear end cars in passenger service as US Mail cars. Not as successful as later containers as the trailer were specifically designed for use on Flexi-Van cars and chassis, the containers [both 36' and 40'] are available too from stonencreations.com . Decals for both the containers and cars have been produced to go with these cars.

The Flexi-Vans were in service until the mid '70's, and made it into the PC era.

These early intermodal cars are available now

It's not clear how many containers are included in the $23.99 price (or I'm flat out missing it).  Can you elaborate?

Also, any chance of the Mark IV cars eventually?

I thought Bob (Traincat) was doing those.

Cool stuff, I had no idea how containers were moved pre double-stack days.

Order sent for two Milwaukee Road.  I just ordered two sets of the containers from Stone Creations.

This is a great item that we Milwaukee Road modelers have long waited for.  Thanks!
Best regards,

Roger

The Flexi-Van car comes without containers - but with decals.

The Containers are available direct from Brian Stone of stonencreations.com

N Scale Kits also have decals for the containers as a separate item - but these are not shown on the www.nscalekits.com website yet but should be up by the middle of next week. There are six different sheets of container decals, each sheet enough for both 36' and 40' containers, as supplied by Brian Stone.

Anyone know if these cars were later rebuilt to VTTX flats for Trailer Train?

If so, I might get a car, but won't need any decals.

I clicked the bottom button and got email confirmation that I did, in fact, order the cars with Milwaukee Road decals.  I does look confusing, though.
Best regards,

Roger

Glad to see these on the street!

Remember that really nice Flexivan trailers are available from Trainworx as well.  I haven't tried to pull the wheels to see if the bodies lock on like the StoneCreations resin containers, but the detail will be much finer on the body itself.

Hey Mike,

Do you know whether these ran on the Copper Country Limited north of Milwaukee? Various issues of the The Milwaukee Railroader had consist lists from the 1960s, and I remember some Flexi-Vans in the CCL having arrived in Milwaukee from Chicago. Wondering whether these were routinely switched out in Milwaukee or if they headed north.

Best wishes, Dave

Fair point - thanks fro pointin g this out. I will get this changed. The decal sheet for the Milwaukee Road includes  ISEX and P&LE schemes too - but see the point that it is not clear on the table. I will try to get this altered, but it won't be until later this week.
