I've been going through my grandfather's pictures and sorting the train ones out from the others. I've gotten most off the way through the '70s so far. Most are New England with a focus of the Boston & Maine but some trips west were made so there's a bit of everything. Gareth - those pictures are amazing. What's most outstanding is the clarity - they all look like they were taken yesterday, with a current digital camera. Were these scanned from 35mm slides, and, if so, what were you using to scan them?

They are scanned from slides. I didn't scan them, he did so I don't know what he used. I do know that he bought a scanner specifically for this. He scanned every picture he took from 1954 to 2004 when he bought an equivalent digital camera. More than 32000 pictures. Mostly family and work, but a good number of trains. I have higher resolution pictures if there are one or two of particular interest to someone, but they're too big to upload all at once like this.

This is an amazing collection. I just flipped through everything in the Photobucket folder. This is a incredible reference source documenting the way things were near the end of the golden age.

32000? Your grandfather burned through a boatload of Kodachrome! He single-handedly must have contributed to Kodak's demise when he went digital.

Those are some great shots, but the one with the Centennials is tops in my book. I lament that I was too young to have made a pilgrimage out to see them on Cheyenne Hill. What an awesome era that was!

This weeks contribution. Another foreign powered train, this time a loaded crude oil train on CN with a trio of BNSF units for power. Probably not super interesting for those in BNSF country, but for us here in the Great White North, a welcomed departure from the typical:
