Minitrix PRR I1 question
« on: December 25, 2013, 10:49:55 AM »

I just bought several I1Minitrix decapods.  My question is how to blacken the wheels and siderods.  I thought of handbrushing some sort of paint.  Maybe an enamel based paint?  I even thought of using gun bluing.  I like how Kato's running gear looks on their mikado engine and want to emulate that.  I have never attempted this before and want to get rid of the ugly nickel plated look.  All comments are greatly appreciated.

thanks,

Scott

Neolube seems to be the favourite around here.
If you are an intrepid modeler, you'll want to correct some of the details and add the air pumps on the side.
Camden & Amboy Models used to do a conversion shell back when they were still in existence.
I have probably the last one ever made.

Well mine never got packaged. Nor is it grey. And I don't have the tender shell.
You'd be surprised what Konrad still has sitting around.

Camden & Amboy Models closed shop long ago.
I'm saving my lone shell for if I ever manage to land me one of those things. (Or until I score a brass one and don't want to bother with a minitrix.)

However, the conversions shells are on the list of Haddon Car Shops projects.
The shell I have should easily serve as a reasonable master with a bit of cleaning up.

Christmas was a bit light this year.
No pressure-pot under the tree, nor mold-making materials, nor resin.
A few things are being re-arranged to see if some things can get in gear before the spring semester starts.

Would it be possible for Jason or someone else with similar abilities to make a mold from the shell and cast new ones?

I don't know if Jason has done a true I1 yet, but if he wants to take a crack at this, he knows where to find me.  :D

Found ya!  Does anyone know who owned the company that produced the castings and what happened to him?

Konrad Richter was the owner of Camden & Amboy Models.
He's still around and is basically a mentor to me.

See if he still has the molds and if not would he mind if we made a few copies of his castings.  I am definitely not trying to step on any one's feet.

I don't know if you want to do that. The Minitrix I1 shell is the same as the K4 shell, which is inaccurate for a K4 and closer to a K2. I1s had much larger boilers and different dome placements. That is why Max used the oversized GHQ L1 boiler for his I1 conversion. It seems that these shells have been detailed, but the glaring dimension errors are still present. The tender shell may still have hope, but a better picture is needed to tell.

EDIT: Sorry for jacking the thread. Now return to your normal neolub programming.

No molds are left as far as I know. I'll have a chat with him when I see him next.
