I beg to differ on the the usable servo wire length. The pic below is my latest RC build that has a 148" wingspan and is 128" in length. The 28 channel receiver is in the nose hatch and the wiring bundle back to the rudders and elevators exceeds 14ft. Out to the aileron servo is 11ft. There are many planes even bigger with longer runs and no issues. We do run the servos at 6V and higher.

It's just what I experienced with what I'm using. 2 of us went together and bought 500 of these 9G servos from Tower Hobbies for $589 shipped. I mean they were cheap (that's $1.15 a piece). When I first got them, I tried one with a 8' signal wire and it wasn't reliable when thrown. 6' was very good, so to be on the safe side, I keep them to about 60" max.  It could be that the one I tested was bad, as about 2% of the batch we got were duds.

 I know that some of the digital servos I have, are 100% better than these cheap ones.

Rodney, try it again sometime with thicker gauge wire, like the one that Bob suggested from Servo City.  Those Tower Pro 9G servos are not that bad at all.  I have them in my planes and they last forever.  But they do wear out eventually.  You can tell when that happens when they start hunting/jittering at center position.

I fly RC airplanes too but not giant scale like Bob!

Rodney, try it again sometime with thicker gauge wire, like the one that Bob suggested from Servo City.  Those Tower Pro 9G servos are not that bad at all.  I have them in my planes and they last forever.  But they do wear out eventually. 

OK, that might be my problem. I'm using 28 gauge wire as that is what the servo is wired with.

Scott, the mounts are 3D printed on one of my FDM printers. The limit switch(es) is attached to the servo with 3M outdoor mounting tape.  Since these photos were taken, I'm now taking the metallic labels off the servos and gluing a piece of stryene on them. Had some that the tape wouldn't stick to the servo very well.

  Started body mounting couplers using the guts of truck mounted couplers in 3D printed boxes.





  Rod, did  you have to mill out the frames



 So far have about 400 cars done. Guessing have another 400 to do yet.

  Installed some sound decoders in some Kato F B's using speaker chambers I printed.

 22 servos installed and the rotary switch matrix wired. Next will be the 2 control panels

    I've been making progress finally after a bout with a bad lung infection that had me down for over 3 weeks.

 Got all the servos wired and control panels made.  Hooking up all the frog power took the longest.












  Cut and assembled some carcard boxes out of smoked acrylic. Printed several 100 waybills for the carcards.

This past weekend, Kansas City hosted "N scale weekend" Ops session. I had 2 operating sessions with 12 guest at both sessions. The road crews ran 16 trains each day and had 3 locals working. Only used Oroville yard as Keddie and Portola are not ready yet. Here is a quick video that Allen (@Bendtracker1) shot to get a idea of the size. It starts as you enter the room by Blairsden.
