Weekend Update 12/15/13

After months of inactivity, there has finally been a work session on the PRR!  I hosted the Gandy Dancers last night.  Half of the crew worked on wiring up block detectors.  The other half of the crew began work on the passenger terminal throat.  I installed the switches leading from the mains to the throat several months ago, but now I've got double track almost up to the main throat that DKS was so kind to help me hash out many moons ago.



Now I've just got to hook up the feeders, install a little more cork, and I can lay down the #10's to test run the main passenger terminal throat.

No more modeling of note other than the 50 trees I put in at the beginning of this week.  The balance of my hobby time was spent finalizing articles for print - all on operations.  With any luck they will be out within the next 6 months.

Took Joy's Mazda out for a railfan trip along Route 2. I ended up following the wrong trackage and ended up in Vermont. No NECR action unfortunately.

This week I worked on some trucks:


New mirrors and windows. Stable for the missing exhaust stack.



This GHQ dump has been sitting on my desk for some time. Finished paint and windows this week.



Also finished this CNC Ford LNT. I like the CNC castings a bit better than GHQ.



What I did with some spare parts laying around. GHQ cab on a Lineside body. Rear layout material.



Showcase Z scale side view mirrors work great on pickups and vans!

Dan those trucks are outstanding as well as the photography . What is that blue material the trucks are sitting on and how did you get the black/dark Blue fade effect in the distance please .

Got the layout back in shape after the basement flood.  My wife happened to be running up to Denver yesterday so she got me a new DCC power supply.  Apparently I do need to clean some cobwebs!  Pardon the quickie iPhone grab...

I finally updated my light box and floods. Right now I am using 3-5 cheapo clamp floods with a mix 5k temperature CFL and LED bulbs. I changed my approach to shooting too. I now am using an ISO of 400 rather than 1600 as before. I am also leaving the F-stop a bit more open this time around, settling between F22 and F25 rather then F29 or F31. This reduces the refraction and grain but also reduces the focal length a bit. The results are pretty encouraging so far. I will see how well this setup does on larger items such as locomotives this week.

I'll shoot the photo rig for next weeks photo night.

So modeling for me is on hold for at least the next 6 months.  You all know we are moving to Baltimore in June, but because of lead paint that was not disclosed to us, we are changing apartments. So looks like most of the trains will be in storage. Good times.

You have to move before your move?!  That sucks.  The good news is that the bulk of the stuff you don't use on a regular basis can be packed up in anticipation of the big move in June.  My sympathies, though.

We just secured an apartment today, so that's good. It has a parking space, a huge garage, and most importantly, built in 1980 so it seems we are free from lead.
