It's a promotion by GE running today only. I signed up for one just to see what the resolution looks like. I wonder what machines they are printing on...

Pray tell, just what is the point? Does GE make 3D printers? Do they make 3D printers affordable to small businesses? That's not been my experience with GE - if it's from their industrial divisions, you will be a Fortune 500 company. :|

I'm not sure myself. I think it is more about showing what 3d printing can do/is doing right now and that it is becoming very common place. They were on one of the morning shows talking about it also. They just tweeted an article touting that they have over 300 3d printers that they use in house for various departments.

Hey, it's a free gadget. I wonder if they have something of their own coming to market. This is not aimed at the industrial side of things.

Probably
a method to show public interest in 3D printing.  GE is no doubt focused on selling 3D printers to a national retailer like a fabric store, pack/ship or sign shop chain.  Print your design locally without sending off to Shapeways.  Somebody will be first at this, why not GE...

They posted a video of my gadget being printed. The are using Makerbots for this promo. It will be interesting to see just how good or bad it is. I picked the item with the most complexity and surface detail.

See if you can get the layer height they printed at.  Chances are it's not the best because print time goes up pretty steeply as the layers get smaller (finer).

Uh, what did they print. It would have been really nice to include a picture of whatever it was after they were done printing it...
