Yeah, that unit has been discussed here before.  I've seen references to it called a GG1/2, but something like a G1 or G-something seems more apropos.  I believe it was used for snowblowing around the shops in Wilmington, Delaware.  That's a great pic you posted, which I have never seen before and really shows off the modified end.

That GG1/2 was in the magazines at the time it was rebuilt, and the reaction was much the same as here.  A very strange looking rebuild, and if anyone ever said WHY they did it I don't remember the answer.  What did they do with the other half?  Or was only half of it salvageable?

If memory serves, the other part was damaged. They actually salvaged more like 3/5 of the loco to use as the GG 1/2 snowblower/ice melter at the Wilmington shops.

Impressed on 2 fronts:
1. I learned of the GG.5 from the Kato box blurb. Never saw a picture until today. Thanks, Frank!
2. I had NOOOOO idea that TtTE had a K4 named Hank!! The last "new" engine I knew was Diesel, or the Scottish Twins. I stopped following TtTE after Carlin left Shining Time Station.
Now that I'm, you know, thirty, I am stunned that that show had both Ringo and Carlin in it.


3. If there's a K4 in TtTE, why can't we have an RTR version in N?

It would be a tough build in N scale, as the motor is in the middle, and half an electric motor doesn't run very well.  If all you want is scenery that would be easy, and you could save all of the working parts as spares for other units.

Just out of curiosity, what was the highest numbered G class on the Pennsy?  As Dave Foxx said, if this had been a PRR product, it would be a G-something.
