SP AC-9

This new thread is  one of those "roundtoits". It is here for Mr. Jason (Superturbine) Smith to post his shell build, whenever he gets "round to it'. Whenever you have time Jason, please consider this loco/tender for us poor SP'rs.

Your streamliner looks great but it just isn't an SP steamer. Keep up the artistic work.

Not my photos but I don't know who deserves the credit.

Carl!  You've done it now!!

Daaaaammmn!!  That's a good lookin engine we've got to do it!  So I have 2 Em1s for this build that I thought I would take my Merry time on!  Guess I cant be lazy.  I think it would be fun to build a 4-4-2 and an A/C9 at the same time!
Heh!

What do I get myself into? :scared:

Jason, take all the time you need and may it all be merry. Isn't she a beauty?  I just really wanted to show all the Pennsy guys what a real steamer is all about. Nothing like a large SP steamer, IMHO. When I was in high school, just last year, I had a neighbor that was a hoghead on these beasts between El Paso and Carrizozo, New Mexico. I saw, heard, and felt these beasts first hand. I'll never forget "the good old days".  BTW, I also have an EM-1 that runs flawlessly, best steamer purchase I've made and it's a B'mann.? ? ?

Take your time and let the artistic juices flow. Someday, when you have the time, let's go for it.

Mike, you know you want to depict that ultra rare ferry move of an AC-9 through SLO.....

Here is the progress on the A/C-9 so far.  Still to build is the front pilot assembly.  The rear ladders will be used from GS-4s (I just happen to have a few extra).  I have sent the pictures to Bachmann.  I think this is an engine they should adapt to the EM-1 and mass produce.

Jason,

those pictures sure make the project pop. It looks great on the running gear and with tender attached. Yep, the pilot is unique. I can't tell from the photo but are there some detail parts, to be added back on?  It is looking tremendous.

Oh yes, lots of details need to be added.  This is just the first test fitting, there is a long ways to go!

Interesting how the external throttle passes though the sanding lines.

Be careful  young Jedi  ... I am not an SPF, but to me an M1 Mountain is far more an artistic wonder. Not to mention that real mountains with weather changes during the year are, in my opinion, more interesting that desert sand.

Its a well known FACT that the SP MT-Class 4-8-2's were the epitome of esthetics for the 4-8-2 wheel arrangement, especially when compared to the standardized look of the Pennsy M-1's......

Here is some progress for the A/C-9s with lots of help from Phillip Johnson.  The first two are being building at the same time.  The handrails across the front of the smoke box and down the boiler was a little tricky, but I think I have it figured out.  As you can see the cab ladders on one of engines is installed and they are simply taken off of a Kato GS4.  The pilot truck is a Con-Cor frame installed over the stock-extended pilot truck.
