Jason, you're onto something. It's more of a "look" in regards to how the loco was exposed to the "elements". Hot, arid conditions and a blazing sun coupled with poor water quality made for a faded, rusty (in some spots), water stained behemoth. I'll have to look through my "library" for an example. Jason's weathering captures a "9" as a well worked hauler that has seen some of the aforementioned conditions. IMHO, weathering gives motive power or rolling stock uniqueness and "character"....

Below is an excellent example of what I call the "Modoc" look. While this is NOT an AC-9, this AC-10 clearly shows the effects of it's "environment". The rust & fading is clearly evident as well as the water stains from the top of the boiler, over the firebox onto the driver(s). This would be an enjoyable "endeavor" to replicate on an N scale version   






This shot comes from the cover of the all color 1991 Video Rails calendar titled "Southern Pacific Cab Forwards". The location is near Wendell, CA. .... on the "Modoc" line.

Thanks for those pictures. She looks pretty well used up, like she has been whipped, rode hard and put to bed wet many times. That look should not be too difficult to replicate. Actually, Jason's look pretty close. Even if I was sloppy, it wouldn't be too obvious.
