That looks like a photo of a model on someone's well-detailed layout!

That's because the locomotive is a Bachmann N scale Consolidation, the caboose is a Bowser N5, and the bridge is a Central Valley truss.   ;)

Is that how that unit's cab door was hinged?  I thought they always hinged on the outside (cab corner).

Yeah not to sound mean... After about 10,000 times of the door slapping into the handrail and making that bouncy sound its something you never forget. Unless Alcos were different?

Many Alco's had a little notch in the nose where the door swings open.

Interestingly, some swung to the outside also.

Hi Dave
Most of the doors on the angled century front were hinged on the inside, I think I have seen some on the outside.  The squared corner cabs, such as the C-630, were hinged on the outer edge.  One advantage of putting the open door on the Atlas cab, is the hinges are already in place, the LL cab doesn't have any.

I'm not so sure that I would be concerned with the height as much as the slope.  Figuring that most people will be focusing in on the trains, it isn't as important to get the overall height right as it is the slope.  In other words, space looks tight for you, so the higher you go with the mountains, the more vertical your cliffs need to be.  If they are completely vertical for the height you're talking, I don't think that you will capture the look and feel of Horseshoe Curve.  I would recommend cutting back the height and focusing on getting the slope correct.  That's the risk of modeling a highly recognizable area, like Tehachapi and the loop.  You have to get it right.

The backdrop is only 6" from Track 4 so I wasn't thinking of reproducing more than the rock face of the cut. Most of the mountain would be painted on the masonite. The craft paper only shows the height of the combination. My grandson was coming to visit and I didn't have much time for anything more complex. I'm gonna try to sketch the planned artwork on the masonite and see if it looks right.

Began setup of the Juniata Division in its new home.  The island-style of both sections is not exactly and efficient use of space.  Plans are afoot to fix this someday soon.



The pants in the photo belong to the USAFA Cadet we sponsor...  He's still a Doolie so he has to stay in his Class As.  He's being "indoctrinated" into N scale railroading...
