The basic mask is in place.

Now I have to add protection for the rest of the tape.
This does not have to be as precise since it only has to stick to the thin tape already in place.

That upward rail is actually different colors.  SO I will have to mask that rail too.

OK.  Sealed up so no overspray could get inside.

Ready to add the maroon (berry).

A lot of work just to get to this point.

But we have red.

But wait.  Let's think this through.
We determined several pages ago that the handrails appear to be black.
Since I'm ALREADY masked over the orange......

Why not mask the red so I can go ahead and paint the rails.

Ready to do black.

Black has been applied.

This is the part I hate.
Removing the masking tape as carefully as I can.
It's a Forest Gump moment- you never know what you'll find.
Will the paint tear at the separation line when the tape is lifted?
Will the tape pull off paint?
Will there be overspray where paint got behind the tape because the tape pulled up?

Here we go.....

I cannot express how relieved I am.

It has taken a long time to get to this point.
But it is finally coming together.

Lots more work to do for another day.

Very nice Ron!
I'm not sure what masking tape you use but I used the el-cheapo tape until I discovered the Tamiya masking tape.  The adhesive seems to be better (easier to work with) and the tape itself seems to be more pliable. I will never again use any other masking tape.

Tamiya tape is more expensive, but in the quantities we use for small models, it is quite affordable.

I actually enjoy the masking process or rather peeling the masking after painting the model, exposing a beautiful paint job.

EDIT:  well, I still use regular masking tape (I like the blue Scotch tape) for covering larger areas. I only use Tamiya tape on the edges of the mask.

Thanks guys.

Boy, looking at masking the roof area makes me think that will be tricky.

Next step will probably be the walkway.

Hmm... I don't have the
patience. I'd probably dip
the model in a bucket of
paint and call it a day...

As the others said, do yourself a favor and pick up some Tamiya tape.

As they say, once you go "Tamiya" you never go back.

Nice job so far.

Hahaha.

OK.  Four people recommending the same product.

Where do y'all buy yours?

Any local hobby shop which caters to model car and military model crowd.  Tamiya is really big in the model car and military model circles. That also do a lot of RC model cars, so if there is an RC shop near you, they will most likely stock Tamiya tape. Other than that, just Google for it and you'll find it stocked by most online hobby retailers.

Ron, I keep 150' of vinyl paint mask and have a vinyl cutter to cut it in whatever shape I need. Tamiya tape still has a place on my work bench. It just works in many situations better than anything else.

Tony,

Is this vinyl cutter a printer with a razor blade?

What is this?

It is basically a plotter with a knife. I have used it for years to do vinyl stickers and create paint masks to help me paint RC car bodies.

This is what I do with it besides model railroading.....

Everything on the body is paint. No decals. The oval guys are picky when it comes to wind resistance.

I do use it for model railroady stuff too.....

I used the cutter to score the brick detail and lines so I could fold a break the parts out of a sheet to build the building.

A caboose done the same way...
