Both are great models. The Intermountain is a hair shorter, thinner in length than Kato. If you're not worried about free standing details and see through grills, go Kato. If you want the details go Intermountain. The S.
That is good reasoning. Another thing to consider is that Kato models. in general. seem to be built to much tighter tolerances than most other brands. That means they run smoother and have that "quality feel" to them. Supposedly, they are still made in Japan (not in China) if that matters. Funny, decades ago, "Made in Japan" label usually meant crappy product. Not anymore. The only thing going against Kato mechanisms (and this applies to all of their N locomotives) is that they are geared way too fast. Their top speed seems to usually be over 200 scale miles per hour. But they still have pretty decent slow speed. Overall, I still prefer Katos over IM or FVM models. But other companies seem to be slowly improving the execution and quality of their models.
truck height, etc...Respectfully,~Bruce
Kato's are also much more plentiful when it comes to parts and support. IM does not seem to be able to support theirs as well.
