My local Restore had a wide range of colors available at good prices, I picked up a few samples as I use this for general scenery base material.  If you are experimenting with color, they might sell you a small quantity out of a large bag.  They let me fill up zip-loc bags for $2 each

What is it you use and do to secure the grout? Is wet water by itself enough to set the grout or do you follow up with matte medium or dilute Elmer's in the conventional method?

Yeah, I know, but I honestly have no data on if just getting it wet works.

OK, thanks. If you never tried, you don't know. I have a dirt/gravel road I want to surface that's only a couple inches in length. I'll spread the grout and wet water it to see if it sets with only that application on a test slab.

That's my fear. I love the look, but I'm scared spitless about what happens if a turnout goes bad.

If you have a Dremel to cut the rails cleanly, and a scraper to get the old stuff up, you can do it.  It's harder than the old method, but as an old carpenter friend once told me, if someone put something together, someone else can take it apart.

We used tile grout only on the scenery when we built our Thompson River Canyon display layout some time back. Only mixed it with water and it set like cement. I personally would only use water and not sure I would use it as ballast. I have used very fine stone dust as ballast in my main yards on my SFRSD and it works very well. It was set with the normal glue and water mix. Similar look to grout but can be re-wet to remove turnouts safely.
