Well, when life gives you lemons . . . build a better layout.  That track plan of yours will be much better on a HCD.  Don't let me hear you bitch and moan about not having space.  Last year, you were talking about building something in the living room and boring a non-Mike Holmes approved hole into the garage.  You can find room for a HCD layout.  You will be assimilated.

My first layout hung on the back of a HCD.  My closet door.  I would open my door, and unhook the layout from top of door and fold down.  Bottom of door had a 2x2 bolted to it, then heavy piano hinge between that and the layout.  The other end of layout had a hook that would latch to the top of door that had an eye bolt.  Now of course, I was 10 years old and didn't mind being on my hands and knees on the floor.  But it gives anyone an argument that against the " I don't have room for a layout ".

I reckon I'll drag this thread out of the dustbin and update you with my latest scheme.  The difference here is I already had a little layout to start from, and I actually sat down at the kitchen table last night and worked on it some.

As I noted in the Weekend Update thread, it's a small Christmas garden I built a few years ago, but it's intact enough that I feel like I can get underway and have something to goof around with while I try to figure out what's next for me hobby wise.  Here's an overview shot with some squiggly lines to indicate what's coming.

As you can see, I need to engineer the bridge a bit more to make it halfway plausible, and I'm planning to update and refine the scenery to get it out of the winter.  I'm planning some pre-war type architecture, and I've got a Bachmann 44T switcher to squeal around the curves.

The overall dimensions are 36" x 26" which fits tidily on the end of the kitchen table.

That's all for now, we'll see how we make out with this one.

Shaking the Magic 8 ball, all signs point to you knocking it out of the park no matter what size it is...

Thanks for the encouragement, boys!  Maybe I'll slap a coat of paint on it this weekend and see what we've got here...

Lifted (gently) from the Weekend Update this week:

The itch is finally getting scratched.  I've been carrying this old Christmas Garden variety rig around with me since I moved out, and finally got some time to sit down and start bringing it into some kind of focus...

I built it about 6 years ago with sharp curves to run my little Atlas Shay around with a couple of coaches.

And it worked admirably at its task.

In order to bring it into the realm of Chris and DKS's tiny layouts, I started by cutting in a couple of switches, and adding 6" to the front edge to make room for a little yard.

This week I started "coloring it in"...  Adding some bits of Sculptamold where required, and beginning the process of upgrading the ballast and ground covers.

I don't think I'll need to have a full crew for ops night, but I will have a fun scenery project, a little fiddle yard to play with, and a photo backdrop for some other projects I'm working on.

Time to start making a couple trees every night!

Pretty cool what a coat of paint and some ground foam can do. Good luck with those trees!

Lee,

I realize this ain't exactly the dream layout and prototypical fidelity may not be of the utmost priority here, but that "dome" of earth over the tunnel portal bothers me.  Heh, kinda reminds me of your shallow septic fields on the Eastern Shore.  Maybe you can hide or minimize it with foliage, but it would look better if it were spread out a little.
