C424 C425 builds?

The GBW decal thread, and the photo's in the latest NSR with the CNW C425 done up with a new rear end, I'm wondering if anyone has done an article on just doing those kit-bashes?

I am yet to see the article but I have "bashed" the ends of two C424's to match more closely the Canadian Pacific and CP Rail prototypes....







I'm not sure exactly what the NSR said but I'm looking forward to comparing notes on what needs to be done to complete that modification..... come on Canada Post...... (zzzzzzzzzz......)

There's a guy in TB who went all Victor Frankenstein on a CNW unit, I believe he used 628 parts on the rear.

I have built three ex-EL ALCO C-425s using the Briggs Models C-425 conversion kit - article in Jan-Feb 2008 NSM:




There are several options for different rear ends depending on the one you need, including the Briggs kit, Miniatures By Eric, or an end from a donor shell.  For my planned CN C-424 conversion I plan to use the rear end from a donor Atlas C-420 shell.  I also plan to try Steve's technique of using the Atlas C-628 cab in lieu of the Life-Like one.

The GBW was a railway I almost modelled - I recall having an old MR article on the line which interested me with the ALCO roster and the train ferry operation.  Unfortunately the prototype was just too far away to research and there were far fewer resources available in those days, not to mention the lack of ALCO models.

Yeah the nice thing about doing the CNW C425 is the radiator section is exactly the same as that on the C628. As they were the last C425s built in Schenectady, this was likely due to Alco becoming more uniform in carbody construction, or perhaps using whatever parts they had on hand. The last is just speculation.

Thanks, I really wish I had gone through the trouble of making a mold of at least the hood portion though. Would really have sped things up for the next one.

Here's a couple more to add to the fine photos above.
Firstly a C-425, former SP&S 326, now on the WNY&P.  This is only a slightly modified Life-Like C-424, still with some phase I C-424 details.

Here's the GB&W 321 shown on another thread.

This one was taken before I added MV lenses and painted the class lights.


I have more planned, including rebuilding M&E 18 & 19 before the real ones have their 50th birthday next September.  Nearly as old as me!!!

I know there are more C-424s out there, I've seen photos!  Can we please see them again?

Just a baisc paint job on my D&H units and a little bit of weathering. They definately need some more work to get anywhere near the standard per above.

Since the picture was taken numbers have been added to the number boards.. I want to do the "I" beam mod on these one day.

While the Maine Central did roster some C424m's during the Guilford era(former D&H MK rebuilds) I decided to paint a pair as if the MEC had bought some used prior to Guilford, this is what I came up with;

Ok, lot's  of great stuff here.
I was just making sure that I wasn't missing an article here on therailwire.
I just got frustrated when I was doing one of the early GBW's (removing dynamic breaks & vents) when I realized that the rear end was totally wrong.  With the kid's going back to college, and winter fast approaching here in Michigan, my thoughts turn to modeling again.
I've got three other C424's,(though one runs rough) that could be conversion fodder.
What was most frustrating was when these loco's where announced in the US  back in what, '01, '02?
I ordered 6 undec C425's.
Got one!
Then found out it was a early C424 deliberately miss labeled! 
Keep hoping Atlas will come through with the rest of the Century family.
