If nothing else, after that video, I now know why SP stuff always looks so nasty. Half the fuel they were burning was going out the stacks as smoke.

Hot damn - awesome video.  That's tunnel 5, the longest tunnel in the Tehachapi's, and the steepest portion of the pass, between Clear Creek Ravine and the west switch of Cliff siding. 

I've spend many an hour at that exact spot watching the show.  You can look down the hill from there and see trains in Caliente coming up the hill, just a few miles as the crow flies but many track miles and curves away.  That's why I model Tehachapi....

Hmm... So $100 for the ends and $50 for the inters. For a 20 car train that would be almost $1,000! (Figuring there would be some discount). I think I need a cheaper hobby.

Well, how does that compare to the monthly budget for Brass cased expendibles?  Or Bacon?  My Bacon budget could easily exceed that in a year . . .

They were Tunnel Motors for a reason, even if they did look like they were on fire.

The bacon budget is a priority. I've been kinda trying to go easy on the brass though because of cost (and until recently, availability). Gotta get Ed up and put him on the end of my AR. That ought to be fun.

That always puzzled me about the Tunnel Motors... they solved the cooling problem, but didn't do anything about ingesting combustion air. Inhaling smoke begets more smoke.

Now take a moment and visualize Alcos in the same conditions. Now you know why SP's Centuries didn't make it east of Bakersfield when they were in road service.

reloading does wonders for the brass budget!!!  Although I can't get to either the press or the railroad at the moment.   As I am now retired from the endless supply of 5.56 and 9mm I had before I have to be more "selective"
