A good one for the kitbashers to model.

I didn't know BN ever had air repeater cars.  Interesting what one misses living on the other side of the country.  Were they used system wide, or only in specific regions, or only on certain trains?

From what I've gathered, it was mostly only on unit grain trains on the northern tier in winter.

If you need another X58 Conrail scheme, how about this:

Interesting non-standard scheme.

That's an odd CBQ livery......
Model railroading isn't saving my life, but it's providing me moments of joy not normally associated with my current situation..... Train are good!

Ike:  Thank you.  I model Montana, but not the GN or NP main line, so wouldn't have a use for it, even if they were around in 1974.  And I don't imagine too many pictures have been published, because most people from the rest of the country try to avoid the Hi-line in the winter.  The old NP isn't bad, following it on I-90, but even the natives don't like driving US-2 in a snowstorm!

Well in 74 they would have been using either U28Bs or U30Bs, or the former F units.  Don't think any of the boxcar Air Repeater Cars came about until the 80s.

Interesting indeed, particularly the use of the large "1" stencil instead of the "I" stencil.

Didn't notice that. Maybe an ESM limited run? Maybe the CRHS commissions a special run. Email me if you'd be interested in doing that with the details.

I'm not so sure that's a 1.  If someone can blow up the photo, to my eye, it appears that there's a line between the I and the rectangle that makes it look like a 1.  In other words, I think they're disconnected.  Perhaps something stuck to the car or the carbody paint has come off.  I think it is really an I, and something else is going on there.

After blowing it up and reviewing, I concur that it is a foreign object of some sort next to the "I".

Also note the mangled lower door track that would preclude opening the door fully!
Looks like a little creative looping at the end of the track too...

Interesting modeling idea, no?  ;)
Cheers,
