The only BLI I owned was their E8A in UP colors (DCC). It looked and sounded fantastic, but stalled over Atlas c55 turnouts. I never could get it past a switch, so I finally sold it to another willing to monkey with it. A buddy at my club took his AB set and wired them in tandem, and his work flawlessly. I plan on searching out another set and this time take the time to ensure smooth running. I may even go for the PAs if I can find a good set at a fair price.

FWIW, I suspect BLI used a different manufacturer for their later sets, as I thought the E7s looked horrid compared to LL (E7) and Kato (E5) offerings. To me it was a step backward in quality for the amount one would have to shell out for them, but then, the sound decoders probably offset any detail shortcomings for some.

Overall, I would say the BLIs are a great buy, but you need to be willing to tweak them a bit and also stay on top of them to keep them running (re: dirty wheels as Mark pointed out above).

Cheers!

Great info guys, thanks!!  I really wish they would have done the CB&Q in E7's not E8's.  Then it would be a slam dunk.  I just look at it like I can do one of two things.  Spend $300 on two engines to retire two of my three Kato E-8s since they are inaccurately done or take the same cash and buy 4 other new locos and just keep the Kato units plugging along.  Only if they had done Q E7's, if only....................................

Of course I am still waiting for another run of E5's.

:|               I' am not waiting for a B L I Pennsylvania 4-8-2 , no sir re Bob. I' am waiting for a "Precision Craft" one. No B L I for me. I own one Precision Craft E-7 with DCC and one with out. On my DCC layout it sounds pretty decent , I also suckered for the control box  (forget name) which you can hook up and access all the DCC features of your diesel using DC Power. Unfortunately you cannot carry it around like the recent Athearn wireless controller so you can not follow your lokie around so I have never hooked it up to use it. My DC version of the same diesel starts at a lower speed so they can not be MU d together. I also own an A-B set of B L I Onions Pathetic  E-8 diesels with sound. (Egads he actually owns some B L I).They are quite nice, I have had no problems with sound drop out on Peco switches on my DC layout although they are mostly run in DCC at train shows on the Wasatch  N Scale layout along with a dummy B . I might of bought UP E-6 locos if they had been offered in the earlier Streamliner Paint like that releasing soon on the E-7 's. Nate Goodman (Nato). "Who owns a S**T Pot of LL E's and some PA's as well".

Lol, I'm still waiting for the GN S2... I think that one came first

If N scale had good SD40-2s, C30-7s, U30Cs, SD45s, SD40s, and SW10s; I'd be in N scale.
