The "other" industrial layout...

OK so I'm using David's trackplan for his Jersey City Industrial Railroad:
https://www.therailwire.net/forum/index.php?topic=27762.0
http://whiteriverandnorthern.net/chapter_9.htm

I like what he is doing, but I'm trying not to copy everything. Mine will all be one era, freelanced, and I'll run Erie equipment.

Since it is a pain in the  :ashat: to find Atlas C55 turnouts I decided to make my own. It also helped that making my own saved me around $200. I did use C55 sectional track for the curves and I added 1.5" to the width of the layout for a little more area between the track and the edge. So mine is 25.5"x48". I just made a frame of 1x2's with 2" foam, on top of that I used 12" square cork panels from the craft store. All track is down and wired. I test ran a 44 tonner through everything:

All the turnout linkages are done, I just have to add pieces of coat hangar rod out to the edge of the layout. In one area I used a curved turnout:

So next on to buildings...

I liked the Vulcan mfg. that David used so I did copy that building. I was able to only use 2 kits since I didn't need a back wall. For the rest of the building I used Walther's modulars. They are a pain and hard to find now. Most of my building is made of parts I already had assembled long ago. Basically I had just enough to make it work.

The roof will take a bit of fitting, but I started:

My building will be called Truscon Steel Co.

Across the street David used Middlesex mfg kits and I really liked his results. I figured I could bash 2 kits instead of 3 and came up with this:

Once the building was glued together I didn't like it. Maybe I should have bought the extra kit and did it right like David did

So I made a change and used 2 American Hardware kits there:

I'm going to treat this building as a separate business and call it General Electric as they had several plants in my area.

Next to that building David made a nice large apartment complex. trying not to copy (and being lazy) I kitbashed my building based on this:

The building is not finished yet.

In the corner David used Walthers candy factory kits to build a furniture factory. I used 2 furniture factory kits  :P  This is one building that I had built before David posted his so even though it may look similar I'm off the hook for copying here.

David named the building after his Grandfather. With all the influence David has had on me I figure it is only right to name the building after him. Exactly what it will be called I do not know yet.

Next to the furniture factory I built this small building out of 2 Gripp's Luggage kits. Adding the 3rd story was a last minute idea and I had to dig up a very old built up kit to find some wall sections. As a result I had to use putty  something I rarely touch. Have no idea what it will be called or what will be "made" here, but I know the track loading area will get a overhead canopy.

Wait, which layout am I looking at again?

All these industrial places blur together.  :D

Looks awesome Chris. Nice kitbashing going on there. The creativity is impressive.

+1!

I'm still a little weirded out that someone would like my plan so much they'd replicate it, or nearly so. I must say, though, that I love how you're developing the structures (as I new I would). And while we're kind of neck-in-neck right now, since you started yours after mine, you're clearly the front-runner in the progress department.

I though about adding a turnout off the sharp curve into what is your building #5 storefronts, but oh well I like the alley idea too. And the siding would look crowded.

Oh and I know you are all thinking another layout is just what I need  :D

OK OK here is my theory:

I hate scenery! The idea of filling and open are with trees and rock work scares me. This layout is like 85% buildings and another 10% trackwork. And what is left is that back of the building cluttered look scenery that I think I can handle.

That is my story and I'm stickin' to it.

You were doing just fine on that layout where you used the rubber rocks... I think you underestimate your skill.

Anyway, I'm kind of the opposite. I have no trouble making acres of scenery, but this industrial layout is challenging me, as I'm a bit out of my element making nothing but brick canyons.
