Finished off the 3rd and final span of the Fort Nelson bridge kitbash adventure.   A bit of clean up and a coat of paint should bring it to life.  I still have to build the piers and insert the rails into the deck (and plank the deck so vehicles can cross it of course), but for now I am quite happy with its appearance which is a slightly compressed version of the real thing

Not exactly "weekend" as much as it is "week" but I took some time to weather my Kato PRR NW2 as well as weather a Fox Valley, Milwaukee Road rib-side 40' boxcar, and dullcote some other rolling stock in my roster. I have a full album with more pictures on my Facebook, but for here I'll just post the highlights.

First off, the Gem, my NW2:
I used Polyscale "Dirt on the fuel-tank and truck frames, and Arizona Rock and Mineral Co. Earth pigment on the walkways and steps, plus a bit on the truck frames and fuel tank to give it a bit more cohesive look.






Now the highlights from the rolling stock weathering and dullcoting:
the lightly weathered Milwaukee Road 40' rib-side. I used Arizona Rock and Mineral Co. Earth colored pigment with an artist's quality brush.

Dullcoted B&O Wagontop

MT Tripple-dome tank car. Dullcoted.

MT PRR Gon with cast-plaster scrap-bale load. Previously weathered with Polyscale "Dirt" and Dullcoted on Thursday.

The other end


That's the highlights of what I've accomplished this week.
The overall project is to put together a small string of weathered rolling stock to be coupled behind my NW2 for photography purposes on some of the excellent scenic modules of New Jersey Southern (N-Trak).

Trolling aside, I think they painted any rail and step that was meant for human hands and feet yellow.

I am bookmarking that site.

Also trolling aside, the images from that search yield a builder's photo of an NW2 in 1941 that clearly shows all the steps and handrails not-yellow (assuming DGLE with the BW photo).  Any idea when they were painted yellow?  There's one that appears to have yellow handrails/steps as of 1966.

Depending on the date of that pic, I might have to chop the stacks down... (my official cut-off is 1956, but I try to stick as close to WWII as best I can)

Well met, Eric! You got me thinking. Let me ask this about builders photos. I've seen a few of them that don't always "match up." I mean, a photo of the prototype is a photo of the prototype, the railroad did not operate in a vacuum. Maybe it was something they started doing after the first diesels rolled out.

I thought painting the handrails was a standard Pennsy practice, though. But I've seen derricks with yellow stirrups and some without. As far as models, go, the Kato NW2 is the only diesel I've seen without factory painted yellow rails. I think all the Atlas and Bachman ones have them yellow, but that doesn't necessarily make it correct, I suppose.

If you do decide to paint them, I hear Pactra paint is good for that.

I'll have to see if the LHS has Pactra.

The stacks look like they aren't round...
Since the engine is already weathered and dullcoted, If the stacks are indeed not-round, I'll at least cut mine down and hit them with some grimy black.
