No modeler is ever going to see everything desired for his/her road at the factory-decorated RTR level.  If you're going to wait for that, you'll never build the equipment roster you want.  For every scheme you want to see on a given model, there are dozens or even hundreds of schemes that other modelers are lobbying the manufacturers to release as well.  Not every scheme will be released RTR, and definitely not every scheme released in the past will be re-released if you happened to miss it the first time.  The best you should hope for is that a manufacturer tools the model so that it can be custom painted in the desired schemes — whether you do it personally, or contract someone to do it for you.   Kato previously released the SD40-2 in MILW, and on most of their models they don't often re-issue schemes.  So you should start searching for the original release, or have some custom painted.  There are plenty of options available to have SD40-2 units painted and decaled in MILW or any other scheme.

I couldn't agree more, which is why I have a nice undec Kato waiting to go in the paintshop for a completion as a KCS Ghost.

My Jul/Aug issue of NSR arrived today and as usual, another slew of Kato SD-40's is announced. Guess what. NO MILWAUKEE ROAD!!! When was the last time Kato served us Milw RD SD40's???? Or NP SD-45's???? What's with the icky NS SD-40's??? This is inhumane treatment to mankind ignoring Milw Rd and NP fans, Kato. Puuuleeeeze get your act together!!!

Dude, enough already. I think I still have an unused dual-action Pasche you can have for free. Buy an undec, paint, decals, & borrow an air source. PM me.

Just to add, if you were to mill out the end sections where the bogie towers fit into the mech the whole Flexicoil bogie would be a direct swap.

Leggy, that's right and you will end up with another SD40 drive but not SD40-2. the SD40-2 trucks have offset gear towers to achieve the longer wheel base.

I don't know about mids. They owned 90 some odd -2's.

Mids were built post 76, I believe, they have the corrugated radiators vs the chicken wire.

And the Milwaukee scheme would be an easy paint job.  But if you don't want to paint your own, search ebay, nscale yard sale, trading post, etc and good luck...there is one on ebay for around $269, for that price I can buy 3 SD40-2 undecs and paint and decals do my own.

If you lend someone $20, and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

I was hoping Kato would add undec Mid_prod SD40-2's but they didn't.  Which is why I bought 3 IC from Tony (aka Skipgear), although they are destined for NS black, not PRR DLGE (I confuse people because I go dual era).  I'm not a dyed in the wool rivet counter so these will be close enough with a few changes eventually.

The one on eBay for $269 has been there for ages. It is not representative of the going rate. There have been some sold recently for $100-110.

Best wishes, Dave

Jeez... for $100 maybe I'll skip the undec and slop some black patches on the side of one of those!

Well don't take my emotions for face value. Just like to add a little drama to my posts for comic reasons. Kind of the nature with trainheads. My fault for not using an emotioncon.I've been anticipating Milw Rd but the day just hasn't come. As others have posted, one must voice wants.

Is this where I form the line in the event that your offer isn't accepted by the person it was intended for?  :D

Like the saying goes: "Everyone has two favorite railroads, and one of them is the Milwaukee Road".

For this much hassle, and discussion, though, I'd de-stress myself by just waiting for something on Ebay, or painting some myself.

It sounded like a good idea at the time... too bad the caboose wasn't in on the plan.

It looks like Intermountain has both F7's and FP7's coming out in Milwaukee Road, so maybe there will be spending opportunities even without appropriate SD40-2's :)

Thanks for all the replies. I learned some good things!

1) Kato did in fact do Milw SD-40's. I probably wasn't into N scale at the time they were released and they are likely coveted.. If I'm patient I can nab one off the bay for a reasonable price. A week later, Kato will announce a second run.

2) Use emoticons when going phsycopathic on the Railwire. This isn't the Atlas forum :D :D :D

Again, I don't have a lot of patience with intricate model work. I'm a RTR Unitrack guy who loves to collect and run trains. It's the RTR qualities N scale has seen in recent years that drew me to N scale in the first place. Otherwise it takes me a month to assemble and brush paint a simple plastic kit. I am trying to picture myself with an airbrush and all I see is wings on pigs. It ain't gonna happen.

Don't let wings on a pig stop you....

Painting is not hard and the Milwaukee is about as easy as it gets. The only easier models to paint are PRR diesels and there off-spring (PC, Conrail, NS)
Take up the airbrush offer, buy some Tamiya masking tape and some paint and have at it. Work with acrylics and if you screw up, dunk it in alcohol and start over till you get it right.
