Just to add, if you were to mill out the end sections where the bogie towers fit into the mech the whole Flexicoil bogie would be a direct swap.

That would be a pretty involved project.  You'd also have to move the worm and create new drive shafts.  That is, if the SD40-2 chassis is actually long enough.

You know, I think that sometimes we N scalers are our own worst enemies.  So you do not like the road names of the latest release, at least the items will be there and not some vague promise of sometime in the future.  Kato is in business to make money for the owners, pay its employees and suppliers, they will produce what their research has shown will sell.  No more do the manufacturers have warehouses full of stuff, it either sells right now or it will not be produced again.  Business has changed, we also must change, learn to repaint or let he manufacturer know that a different paint scheme will sell.

Unlike IMRC and Walthers, Kato at least will issue undecs.  And you know what you can do with those, eh?

And isopropyl alcohol works on decorated models of manufacturers who don't.

I don't know Bryan, Kato paint has presented as bullet proof at times. Like Japanese Kevlar. Or is it Chinese?

But I didn't think these were mandatory.

Japanese....

I knew that, but I wasn't sure if Kahhhtoe had swallowed its pride and gone to the continent for less expensive manufacturing.  I wonder what would happen if a Chinese firm kept Kato's molds?  SJW3?

I think the title of this thread is misplaced at best and off base.

Well, I ordered a BN from Trainworld today. Didn't care for the solid white face scheme they did a few years ago. Maybe us Milw fans will get lucky next run.

As for the original point of this thread, the pics in NSR were of all mid pro units, did Milwaukee even have mids or where they all earlies?

And if all earlies, Kato did those in undec, Klien had only 100+ when they first dropped.

edit: Also doesn't Milwaukee also have the shorter fuel tank, so even the Kato one is wrong.

I don't know about mids. They owned 90 some odd -2's. I think you're right about fuel tanks but don't know for sure.  Kato is known to use artist liscence when there are minor variatons amongst roads. What a good number of us don't know,  care to know, or are wiling to tolerate won'tt hurt us. Not that that's a good or bad thing. Just the attitude. As far as painting one up, I'm just not inclined with those skills. Or at least, not at this point.

No modeler is ever going to see everything desired for his/her road at the factory-decorated RTR level.  If you're going to wait for that, you'll never build the equipment roster you want.  For every scheme you want to see on a given model, there are dozens or even hundreds of schemes that other modelers are lobbying the manufacturers to release as well.  Not every scheme will be released RTR, and definitely not every scheme released in the past will be re-released if you happened to miss it the first time.  The best you should hope for is that a manufacturer tools the model so that it can be custom painted in the desired schemes — whether you do it personally, or contract someone to do it for you.   Kato previously released the SD40-2 in MILW, and on most of their models they don't often re-issue schemes.  So you should start searching for the original release, or have some custom painted.  There are plenty of options available to have SD40-2 units painted and decaled in MILW or any other scheme.
