So on a side note, I got a peek at Tru Color paints this weekend. The GN green was impressive. The guys at the Whistle Stop in LA were slobbering all over them. Something to look at in the future. Cheaper too..

This affects me minimally.  I haven't used either Floquil or Polyscale as primary colors for decades.  I do use them to weather stuff, but for durable, easy to spray, easy cleanup and accurate colors I've been using Scalecoat II since there was Scalecoat II.  Enamel based paints just work better for me.

For UP colors, both Floquil and Polyscale aren't the best choice, and I have never liked painting my engines or cars with flat colors, since it's not generally prototypical.

Lately I've been using Tru Color paints for some applications, and I'm VERY impressed with the finish (medium gloss), ease of application, price and color. 

Sooooo...bye bye to Floquil and Polyscale.  Don't let the door hit you in the a$$ on the way out....

The question is why are they "losing their shirts?"

I mean those seem to be dominant brands within their respective niches. 

Probably a case of too much overhead gobbling up the profit margins.

Heck someone who wants to get into the paint business should consider buying those brands.

I hate to see any products discontinued but I have to say that TRU-COLOR IS THE S&%T.  I have been painting for over a decade now and have used every paint available and this is the best stuff ever.  Great color,  great coverage, easy to spray,  easy to clean, great finish.  I have yet to find a weakness.  The best part for me is the Northern Pacific color selections.  Floquil has been a mainstay for me and I will miss them but I can adapt.

I use Floquil exclusively . I tried huffing water based paints but I just hyperventilate . As far as squirting it , no success so far , and clogs too quick , and clean-up is worse , and on and on . Calif and Canada is to blame for this demise of such a file line of RR paints , I hope they all choke on their clean oxygen levels . What candy asses .

Is Badger all we have to a non solvent based RR themed paint line? All the locals have just recently warmed up to the acrylics and that is what they want to shoot with now.

My take on the letter......

We want to downsize to one production facility. It can't handle the full line, something had to go.

Sad part is, we sell more Pactra and Pollyscale at our shop than all the other Testors lines combined. It is going to hurt us pretty bad.

I tend to run far away from saying anything critical about a fellow manufacturer, but this move by Testors is bone headed.  That said, they have to do what they have to do to stay in solvent. )  Their line of Model Masters paints both enamel and acrylic have been panned by everyone except the editors of Fines Scale Modeler (for obvious reasons)  The stuff is hard to thin and use, always has been.  Grainy, clogs, uneven finish...on and on.  We used Testors FSN paints for color chips to mix early Gunze Sangyo Paints before they hit their stride and started offering up every color under the rainbow for those of us doing military models.  Most of the Japanese paints are superior to anything we have domesticaly except for the Polyscale line.  Often I have thought it would be neat to have MTL bottle our paints for hobby use.  Cali EPA laws may preclude doing any of that though...nice idea.  Till we have a better option, I will happily mix my own brew of Tamaya acrylics...old school style.    Sad to see an old soldier like Floquil go away.

For those of you who have an aversion to solvent based paints, there is a very good alternative available now.  True Line Trains http://www.truelinetrains.ca/‎  is now producing a line of acrylic water soluble paints that are very good representations of the prototype. The ones I have used so far are very good (with the exception of the BC Rail red which appears a bit too orange. I'll reserve judgement until I see it on a model however).  I have no connection to TLT but thought I'd mention it here as an alternative to consider.

Unfortunately as Calif. goes so will the rest of the U.S.   I like clean air and such just as much as anyone else, but the shortsightedness of some special interest groups is apalling.  Many people are like Lemmings it seems.....Mike
