So I guess I'm not buying one.  I'll wait until these start showing up at shows cheaper and just mod/paint my own.

but the truck center looks wrong.... the GN and Wabash cars had the right underframe  imho

And the Roanoke Shops continues to do such work, with the Top Gons and some former N&W hoppers both being stripped down to the center frame and trucks and then reassembled with new parts to meet the needs of the line.


  The cars you are referring to are NS classes G117R and G118R, these are hybrid Coalporter rebodies built by FreightCar America using the late 80s Trinity built NS class H49 and H50 hopers, not any of the TopGons or any former N&W hopper.  Progress Rail is stripping the cars at it's scrapyard in Roanoke, then shipping the usable components by truck to FCA.  FCA leased the former East End Shops from NS in 2005, NS started closing the former East End Shops in 08/2000, with the foundry (and shops) being closed in 05/2001.

As an aside, rumor has it the former Conrail H2 classes (Hollidaysburg built from Johnstown kits 1994-1996) will also get rebuilt.

Isn't actually against the rules to paint couplers, since it might cover up a defect?

Couplers and wheels... but it's a recent ruling, mid 1990s.  There was no such restriction in the 60s.

A few more notes... Greenville didn't make ends, they used Standard Railway Equipment ends.

Also, the lots being used are NYC lot numbers. Greenville used Office Orders... i.e NYC 53000-53084 were built under OO822 (or O.O. 822 for clarity, Greenville used both).  NYC also had another batch built under OO832.

To my knowledge, OO817, OO822, OO827, OO831 and OO832 are the orders for all the cars built with the short 41' 3" wheelbase, roofwalk (and high mounted brake stand),  all are Ford Pool cars (multiple roads were built under each OO)


And, the best part... MTL fixed the doors! 

Make you a deal Joe... I'll give you all my research, but I want a car from every run :P

What was changed on the doors?  All four releases appear to have the same door tooling to me.

From the picture above, the two inner horizontal stiffeners are the same height as the outside frame...

I had tooling make the changes to the door.  Looking at the underframe to see if we can get something scheduled to change the coupling.

The coupler thing is a surprise, my guess is that CR had some info that the couplers were painted green much like many other roads painting truck sideframes and couplers the body coupler.  I'll look into it.

Looks like the the green couplers are real (at least on a brand new car).  Who would have thunk...  :facepalm:

Perhaps.  But the model is based on the Despatch Shops clone in Volume 1, which did not have green couplers.  If they had worked off the Greenville photos in Volume 2, then the graphics would have been correct and we wouldn't have any valid issues regarding the couplers, roof color, etcetera.

My head got spun around with all the lot discussion so going back to my original question - Did the NYC have these early Greenville cars in that scheme? 

And I'm not talkin' kinda or almost; I'm not a harsh rivet counter but the ends, doors, roof, and side panel count and placement have to be right.  Truck centers can be modded, if need be, without cosmetic body change. But like with the GN car, as much as I wanted that particular car, I'm a GN fan and the incorrect side panel layout was too much to make me consider buying it off the shelf.
