Any interest in an N scale cowl body GE Dash 8-40CM resin kit?

Hello All

I have recently been in communication with Jeff Briggs from Briggs Models regarding the possibility of producing an N scale cowl body GE Dash 8-40CM resin kit. For anyone modeling CN, BC Rail of QNS&L after 1990 this locomotive is a must have. This locomotive can be seen all over North America in Lease service from CN as well.

The kit would include all parts (except for horns), for the CN and BCR variations, possibly including  the BCR rebuilt radiator as well. The kit would most likely make a use of the Atlas C-40-8 or C628/630 mechanism (not included), with a new resin body, fuel tank, gearboxes, side frames, and associated etched metal parts. The kit would retail for about $135.00 Canadian and the minimum run would have to be 40 kits.

This is only an expression of interest/order list. No cash up front from anyone. Once the model is ready for shipping, Jeff would contact you and put it up for sale on his Briggs Models website, on a protected page, and it could be ordered direct from him by using PayPal, credit card, or by mail if desired.

I have built several of Jeff’s resin kits and I have to say that his work is exceptional and his kits are very well engineered.  His C-425’s, M630’s and M420’s will attest to this statement. PS: Just to make it clear, I am not in anyway involved with Brigg’s Models. I am just doing a little market research to help him out in order to see if this project would be viable. Also I would very much like to see this kit produced so I could represent several on my layout.

Five years ago I'd have jumped in for 3 or 4, but now an HR616 is more my speed. Era cuts off at 1989, so just a little too late for me.

But Jeff Briggs resin shells truly are top notch quality... he did a great job on the M420's - a wonderful kit that is very well thought out and executed.

Now that IC is part of the CN borg, we keep seeing BCOL engines in Baton Rouge and New Orleans.  That gives me an interest, but i have to agree that the $135CDN price point would be a tough sell for me - until I see Tim and Tim and Mark and Pud do sets of them, then I'll be filled with regret.

I think what drives the cost up is the Dofasco truck, which retails for about $40 at Central Hobbies and is designed to correct the wheel spacing of the C628/630's tri-mount. I think a fair amount of work went into developing the truck and it is a critical detail of the C40-8M. If the Atlas C40-8 is going to be used for these, a new truck design would be required.

I have received feedback from several people regarding the used of an Atlas mechanism for the project. Many are suggesting a Kato mechanism would be better suited. I have been speaking to Jeff about it and his is looking at reworking the design of the shell/trucks for the Kato SD40-2 mechanism as long as the dimensions match up against N scale models.

It seems that the SD40-2 might be a better option than the Atlas C630. I will let you know more when I hear back from Jeff.

Only if the truck center are the same. IIRC, when the first order was built the folks in Erie were at their wits end during assembly as EVERYTHING about the -8M was different. A lot of the parts came from Canada due to the Made in Canada requirements imposed at the time (CN was still a Crown Corp back then).
