He asks excitedly "Did you say Ménage à Trois?"
No, I said "Ed's Law."

Rustig away in Baltimore.  I saw it a couple years ago headed East on I95.  I know that several GG1s are in museums but ths one has a history which should be saved.

I was the one who placed this GG1 where she sits today, and quite honestly, it needs to be scrapped. There are tons (literally) of other GG1s in preservation and much more worthwhile candidates for preservation / restoration.

Russ is probably right, and since there's only so much preservation funds to go around, I'd like to see money thrown at "Old Rivets" first.  It's been sitting outside for years, too, and it truly is one-of-a-kind, not to mention the first GG1.

It's sad you cant give a GG1 away today (just ask the Virginia Museum of Transportation)...

They've tried to give it away. Several times. Everyone gets all excited until they see the bill to move it.

Dave, it was under the bridge for a while, but the locals were using it as a drug den, whorehouse, and motel 6, so we moved it, a troop sleeper and 2 heavyweights inside the fence. The locals responded by breaking into the boxcar that took its place and setting fire to it.

The last 'move attempt' was to York, PA. The group there raised $50K. The estimate I gave them to move it was $390K. They left. Any takers?

Did that include PCB removal?

Why not advertise that GG1 rust will get you high and the PCBs will really get you ripped?  The Baltimore crackwhores will have #4876 cleaned up in no time.   :D

Why so much to move it? Weight? Can it only be moved by rail?

The PCBs and transformers have been removed, so no worries there.

The cost was based on costs associated with moving the scrap pile from Baltimore to north of York. The move involved:
2 300t cranes in Baltimore
2 300t cranes in York
2 specialized flatbed trucks to carry the truck assemblies
1 multi-axle split-frame trailer to haul the carbody.
6 escort cars
PA and MD Overheight, Overweight and Exta-dimensional load permits
Insurance.
Riggers in PA and MD
Fuel for the rigs
Police escorts
My fee

It all adds up quickly and if one thing falls apart, the whole plan can double in price in a couple days. For instance, when the CRHS moved our camp car, there were some delays in NJ and we nearly missed our window of travel in NJ (oversized load permits are often only good certain days at certain times). Had we missed it, it would have required new permits in NJ and PA, hotels for the drivers, rescheduling the cranes, etc. Now, who wants to move it?
