Cool CSX Philly Sub. Southbound Freight on 4/6/13

I was on the way to work at about 6:45 a.m. this morning in Newark, Delaware and got stopped by a CSX freight train on the Philly Subdivision.  Anyone along the route this morning may be treated to a cool freight train with some interesting finds if you look close.  Of course, I didn't have a camera.

1) Three locomotives, including the third unit CSX MP15DC #1141.

2) The real find was a dirty and rusty gondola with reporting marks "BO."  That thing probably hasn't seen a paint shop in thirty or forty years.

3) A couple of ex-Southern Ry. boxcars, including one waffle-side.

4) Maryland Midland covered hoppers.

5) Other covered hoppers with the large steel plate welded on the side for logos that reminded me of the old RF&P covered hoppers.  I have no idea who actually owned these or their heritage, because they've obviously been repainted over the years rather than just patched.

It was a really nice gift from the railfanning gods, and, because I wasn't running late, the three or four minute wait was enjoyable.  A fun train to watch, especially with the variety and interesting finds.  You just have to love being in the right place at the right time.

Heh, I just thought of a neat game, being inspired by that B&O gon.  What's the oldest piece of equipment you have spotted (please provide photographic evidence) on the rails.  Museum, maintenance of way and, derelict equipment parked in a yard don't count, so preferably, we'd be looking for things still running in general service.

For example, I caught this PC gon on a NS freight during a CRHS Rail-B-Q and this WM covered hopper crossing the Susquehanna River on CSX within the last few years:

Given that the WM car is lettered 'CSXT', I take it we're going to allow cars that don't have the original reporting marks, yes?

Tho' not as old as that car still lettered for PC or - heavens! - B&O, we have a regular coal drag through here with tubs that still have ACI labels. Build dates are in the late '70s. I'll make it a point to be on the sunny side next time it rolls through and I'm not 10' up on a ladder working on something.

I would say if the majority of the original paint scheme is intact, i.e., the heritage is obvious, patches are allowed.

You want something rare?  There are stil 2 gons in original PRR paint moving on the rails.  The latest issue of The Keystone has a photo of one and it's still in decent condition.

Even rarer.  Not that many cars were done in Family Lines.  Caught this car just last week.

Not that rare thirty years ago, but the Family Lines scheme ceased by the end of 1982.  Seaboard System was created on or about January 1, 1983.  Seeing it today is certainly rare.

what if the patch is the old reporting marks? I've seen hoppers in town before (can't remember if I got pics, I'll have to look) with NYC and SOU stencils.

NYC cars are more likely to be ex-Conrail cars transferred to CSXT after the splitup....

NS seems to be painting out/patching a lot of old cars and restenciling them with their original reporting marks.  This seems to be especially the case for gons from what I've seen.

Seems like a lot of old gons keep the original markings and wind up in work train service.  Here's an L&N on a work train on the Popes Creek branch last year.

I found the pic (in my facebook archives), and it's of an ex-conrail car wearing NYC reporting marks, and there's also an ex-southern hopper with sou reporting marks. I will see if I can find them on photobucket

This snowplow was rebuilt in 1927 from an even older wooden plow originally built in 1907...
