Old Railroad Adverisements

I just found a box of old Trains, Railroad and other magzines, some dating to the late 50s.  I have scanned some railroad advertisments from these and I figured I'd share some.  First up is for a KCS fan I know lingers here.

I'll post more over time.

Come on, you know if it was color I would do it in color.  From Aug 1960 trains.  I'll be a nice guy and next time we meet you can have the copy.

EMD ad.  Check out the SD=18 which were never built.

And the RS-1325, only two built, and they didn't look like the silhouette in the ad.

Also, the ad says "GP-18", "SD-24", etc., with the hyphen, rather than the GP18, SD24, and so on that is accepted practice, without the hyphen. So it's EMD's ad department who has been pouring the gasoline on decades of railfan and MRR'er debates.

EMD's marketing and advertising has been the source of foobies such as the Atlas/Rivarossi/Con-cor SW1500, and the Athearn DD40 in HO.

SD18s were indeed built... C&O, B&LE, C&IM, DM&IR, Reserve and export units.

Making it worse, EMDs marketing and advertising is the start of BOTH sides of the - or no - debate.

That said, in all the EMD stuff I have or have seen, there's a bit of a pattern... all the 567 stuff used the -, GP-7, SW-7 etc.  The 645 stuff in the very beginning (i.e, in EMD product manuals that were sent out before actual 645 production) used the -... so SDP-40* and DD-40.  In the spec manuals sent out after 645 production began... there's no -... so SDP40, DD40A, etc... even for 567 models still made after 645 production (GP28 and SD28 specifically)

*SDP-40 manual had flared radiators in the drawings ;)  Pretty sure this book is where Athearn got the DD40 from

I'm a fan of old railroad advertising. I figure they'll look good framed and on the wall of my train room ... if I ever get a train room.

I've picked up several C&NW items from the '40s and '50s, and more on the Challenger and Streamliners from the same era. Even a magazine ad from 1888 advertising travel to the West Coast on the Overland Route ("music on the rails.")

Like this?:

This is displayed at the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento. It's sooooo 1950's, and I dearly covet one for my own train room. Doesn't even have to be an original. :)

Damn, couldn't find an SD-18 when I looked and forgot that C&O had some.  And here is something for you UP fans from 1960.

GE wasn't about to be beat by EMD back then.   Here's their new U25b and in color.  Who would have thought back then that GE in 50 years would be the top dog in diesel electric building.
