Howdy, folks!
I'm looking for some info on Gallitzin, PA. Very specifically, the New Portage Tunnel.

This diagram suggests that New Portage Tunnel was a double track tunnel. I can't find any pictures of it, though.

Alternate version:
Ed Kapucinski
Every night, he plants a new tree.
He asks excitedly "Did you say Ménage à Trois?"
No, I said "Ed's Law."

I'm only working fromm memory and it's been a while since I've visited the tunnel but I believe it was originally built as a 2 track tunnel. As time went on one track was removed and the single track was moved to the center of the tunnel which allowed increased overhead clearance.

I did some railfanning in the area in the early 80's and I believe the single track was in place at that time. There was a similar arrangement at the tunnels at Spruce Creek where they ran a single track down the center of a two track tunnel.

There were actually three tunnels, Allegheny, Gallitzin, and New Portage.

The popular "twin tunnels" were Allegheny and Gallitzin. Gallitzin is not out of service and they widened Allegheny.

New Portage is the one I'm modelling on my layout since it's the only two track tunnel on the main line in my transition era time frame.
Thanks to all for your replies! I now have a good understanding of these tunnels.
It is interesting that they changed New Portage tunnel to a single track for double stacks. It makes sense.

Here is the view looking east from two or three years ago.

The tunnel on the right shows the widened bore and new portal from Conrail's double stack clearance project in the 1990s, so is not representative of what it looked like during the PRR era.

Also, for some shameless self promotion,  I've updated my track plan over at https://www.therailwire.net/forum/index.php?topic=28969.15
