I just got the March announcements from Atlas.....

The S2 is going to be available with sound by Loksound as well as standard DC versions.

I'm definitely in for a Gold version in Pennsy.
It looks like I won't be buying much for awhile.

I agree.  Looking at the heavy-hitter roadnames they are offering up, it's clear that Atlas is swinging for the fences with this one!

I wish the S2 was something I needed...it will be interesting to hear what it sounds like.  I had the opportunity to hear and ride a real one (ex-Dept of Energy/Pantex #740-8 at the Amarillo Railroad Museum) this past summer and it is certainly unique!  For more info including video: http://amarillorailmuseum.com/switcher.html .   I suppose if they did that one I might be ponying up, but I don't think I'm gonna hold my breath...lol.  (it's not a project I would take on to custom paint, at least for now.  Must.  Resist.)   Regardless, I'm happy for you guys that need one and I'm glad to see Atlas get "back in the game."

Bob, consider what aspects of Pennsy you're modeling and the proper ratios of switchers to road locos should flow from that and make the choice easier.  Like for me, I'm more road engines.

Dave, the thing with PRR is that they had a ton of switchers and probably more models and makes than any other railroads for its day.  Gotta check my references to see if and what S2 units had mu so I can run a couple together in a local or short coal train.

Looks like none of the PRR S2s had mu.  Most were assigned to Buffalo, NY and some to the New York Division.  I do remember seeing an S unit running dead in a train on the CV branch many years ago.

Tempted to get a CP S-2, but we'll see. Not interested in sound, though... to me its the Dreadnought syndrome; once you build one you've made the balance of your fleet obsolete. Also, every video I've seen on youtube of sound equipped locomotives tends to be a cacophony of horn blowing.

I'll get at least one of the sound loco's.

But I gotta say after hearing it for a few minutes I've had more than enough.

I want one! Wait, one? I want all 3 PRR but I don't really need that many.     I'll have to check my Wither's books to see how common they were in the Northern Division - Buffalo line.  Unfortunately I'm not doing Buffalo so Ebenezer yard doesn't factor in.   From Olean down to Renovo was, from what I can tell, a stronghold for FM and Baldwin switchers so I think that not many ALCo products were around.  But I'm stretching the facts on enough other things that a little more won't hurt.
