Hey, got to start somewhere.
My first layout with my Dad was a 4x8. A simple oval, with a passing siding for the depot, and a turnout that went to two spurs. We then extended the passing siding, dropped it while raising one end of the oval, and it then went into a "staging yard." I think the ruling grade on that extension and the oval went up to 3.5%. It was a hot mess!
Still lots of fond memories of that layout. It got us really moving in the hobby instead of just getting the box of trains out for under the Christmas tree.
