Thank you all for the wonderful write-up on these cars!
The weathering jobs really bring the model to life...

I was wondering on the build date for these cars?
Cheers,
Scott

Looks to be 1948-62 for CP cars, 1954-62 for CN, 1962 for PGE / BCOL cars, and 1956-64 for TH&B.

Pud, I know this is heresy to you, but I think that between Microscale 60-221, and CDS 228a or b, 454, and 447, there should be enough to do the slabs in the multimark. Seems that the multi in 228 is a perfect match for the size used on some (think it depended on the shop doing the painting), but the red triangle would have to be borrowed from 454 (trimmed) or 447. Not sure if the white CP Rail in 60-221 is correct size, but will check tonight.

I agree; albeit I "ain't goin there"............LOL

Could you be more specific as to the square and/or round hatch versions?

I model 1956 NE PRR, so what would I possibly see of these paint schemes/models?
Cheers,
Scott

CN would be in this image:
http://static.pwrs.ca/product_images/174414_1.jpg

Six square hatch cars:
CN 135200-135399  Builder: MIL  BLT  7-10/56  6 rf. hatches, renumbered CN 352174-352353 ~1967-70

Eight hatch cars first delivered to CN in 1960.

CP in this image (like Pud's fine model):
http://freight.railfan.ca/cgi-bin/image.pl?i=cp380410&o=cprail

Six square hatch:
CP 380201-380250  Builder NSC  BLT 11-12/50  6 rf. hatches, 8 sliding drs.
CP 380251-380300  Builder NSC  BLT 11/51  6 rf. hatches, 8 sliding drs.
CP 380301-380600  Builder NSC  BLT 3-4/53  6 rf. hatches, 8 sliding drs.
CP 380601-380700  Builder NSC  BLT 11/53  6 rf. hatches, 8 sliding drs.
CP 380701-380740  Builder MIL  BLT 10/55  6 rf. hatches, 8 sliding drs.
CP 380741-380840  Builder MIL  BLT 6-7/56 6 rf. hatches, 8 sliding drs.

Eight hatch cars first delivered to CP in 1959.

And the TH&B in this one:
http://freight.railfan.ca/cgi-bin/image.pl?i=thb2834&o=thb

Six square hatch:
THB 2800-2819  Builder NSC  BLT 1/56  6 rf. hatches, 8 sliding drs.

Eight hatch cars first delivered to TH&B in 1962.

This may not be 100% complete or accurate, but give a fairly good idea for 1956.

Anyone know, btw, what paint to use for the CN grey cars? I'm thinking True Line Trains #TLT010018, grey #12, but am not quite sure.

I think thats the right choice of grey Mike. What are you using for decals ? Do you have a CDS set ?

So now I just need to know the as built paint scheme?

The CP cars "as built" is the scheme I used for my first model. The script comes in the early 1960's and then the multi mark after 68...(uh hum...."blah") The TH&B livery doesn't change throughout the entire run as far as I remmber. The CN "as built" on their early ones would have been the red lettering "Canadian National" livery but would have changed to the wiggly worm by 1960-61. The PGE "as built" on their original ones is the black lettering "Pacific Great Eastern", with the map coming later in the 60's.

Hope this helps.

Looks like a trip to the CVR is in order for some paint.

Actually yes, I would seem to have gotten the last CN noodle set from TMR... also picked up a pair of TH&B. No such luck with CP Script or Multimark. Not sure of the original CP scheme as it's a little too old for my era.

A small correction if I may - the riveted side cars from NSC (PGE 2101-2115) were delivered with RED stencilling as they were tacked onto the CN order of 1962, and the welded side cars from MIL (PGE 2116-2125) were delivered with black stencilling as they were tacked onto a CP order.

Numerous cars for both groups cars are known to have been painted into the map logogram scheme from the late 1960s.  A few cars were repainted grey and re-stencilled BCOL in black, and two cars were repainted BCR Light Green and received the dogwood logogram.  In the 1980s at least three cars were repainted BCR Dark Green with BCR or BC RAIL logogram.  See my list above for details.

In the CN Color Guide by Morning Sun there is a photograph of one of the NSC-built cars in  the CN noodle repaint.

Really ? red ? I've never seen a picture of the red lettering - do you know of such a picture ?
