Nice, too bad I don't have any room for it on my layout, although I still have space available for an industry that size or a bit larger.

Still like the idea for a modernized storefront for the DPM kits.  I could use about six of those, for various buildings.  Porcelain panel or sheet metal types; deco to googie architecture styles would be way cool.

Quick question: is there anything you can do to make the red areas appear like brickwork? I know you said lasering would take too long and using pre-molded brick wouldn't work. Maybe brick printed paper overlay?

The key to laser cutting styrene is to put tape on the styrene before cutting.  (Hint: Tape with a rubber based sticky side, so it burns off clean... not just plain masking tape)

Modeler's Choice used to (maybe still does?) make HO rolling stock kits from laser cut styrene and their kits were pretty clean.

Brick patterned styrene sheets are not cheap either plus you have the pesky problem of that open half brick along the edge that you'd have to cover. The reason I use the .060 acrylic is because it is the main plant. When the first 4 walls are glued together with the roof you could set a couple of bricks on it and it would hold them easily. If I had to try to tab the styrene, no easy task with that drastic of a pattern, and use it as the main plant it would be so flimsy the quality of the structure would go down immediately.

My husband keeps picking this thing up and saying he wants to show it to people around here. He also wants it in Z. Like David said in one of his posts, if you don't like it don't buy it. This has so many kitbashing possibilities that the less expensive it starts out the better it is for you guys who love to build.

Hi Karin, question for you.Any chance of just buying parts? The only place I can use this on my layout would only have room for the front wall and the right sidewall.Te rest would just be styrene sheet because it wouild not be visable from any direction.

There are more photos in my picasa album. You'll see an interior corner shot.

I didn't see a link to this album.  Did I miss it?  Very interested to see more.

The door is lasered in 3D.

A good line of doors and windows might be easy to make .. there are a whole lot of detail parts no longer available .. I would stick to that type of thing if the kits are too expensive ... does your laser also do wood?

Tichy and Grant Line still have a plentiful line of window and door details available. Doing windows and doors on the laser is certainly possible but I prefer designing new products, particularly structures, over trying to figure out what doors and what windows would be most preferred. The companies mentioned have a better selection and I would not enjoy doing the same products for a living.

A price was never set for this combo industry/school building so it may not be too expensive. I had referred to added etched bricks putting the price over the top.

I have 2 of the best brand table top lasers on the market. Wood has always been possible with even the low end laser. I was trying to show how lasering in this hobby can go beyond just wood.

I truly felt the members here would like to see a laser project go from idea conception to finished product in a short time. I think I will go back to just doing what I do and spend less time sharing about it.

Everytime I read through one of these and I see Tom's signature banner I get totally derailed, and have to start over.

I appreciate the effort.

Me too. This is a forum with many critical thinkers who appreciate quality models.  Sometimes the feedback can sound harsh, but that is frequently a problem with internet/email communications. One is sometimes unsure of the tone. Of course, there are people who are a PITA regardless of whether they communicate in writing or in person....the main difference is that online there is a transcript!

Thanks for sharing your work with us. I hope you continue to do so.

Best wishes, Dave

Intrigued
by the Shell gas station in the album.  I might be tempted to pull out a full layout section and replace it with that structure...

That's Z scale...

We've been talking about the possibility of doing it in N, but that would be a ways off.
