Pennsy P70 coaches and variations

Howdy folks, I didn't see any recent P70 threads and didn't want to necromance old threads, so I decided to start a new one.

Since there are over 9000 variations of these P70's I'm trying to narrow things down. Maybe you all and your collective knowledge can help me "fine tune" my models further.
I'm not necessarily trying to model any specific cars, but based on my research, I think I'm at least close on a few of these. But, obviously, the closer to prototype I can get, the better.

P70R#3752 - clerestory roof with diamonds removed and vents added










P70fbR#1860 clerestory roof diamonds removed and 2 large vents added









P70fR#1860 with arch roof









P70R- generic. It seems like these would fall into the P70R class, but I'm not sure. Looking for some feedback on the underbody and door windows.

Actually, that's some pretty raw, uncensored hawtness right there!

What's your technique for removing the vent ducts over the vestibules?  I tried once and it went to crap pretty quickly.

Model railroading isn't saving my life, but it's providing me moments of joy not normally associated with my current situation..... Train are good!

Are you planning steps for those?  If so, I would hold off on GMM steps and see if MTL will offer them.  Joe's hinted that they might.  The MTL ones are the correct width.

I do indeed plan to install steps. I have the GMM ones all assembled, but yeah, the MTL ones are better.

Hi Jish,

How did you get rid of the vents over the vestibules. That is the pieces sticking out from the celestory roof?

Apart from that you have done so great work on your cars.

It is a pity about the thickness of the window mullions :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

I must be spoilt as Joe sent me a few underbodies. Not only are the steps good but there are a lot of other usable parts that can be used under other cars as well.

To remove the vents you need to sand, but doing so will put a hole in the roof, so body putty needs to be added from the inside.

What I would like to know is how the diamonds were removed. Thats fine modeling. Messed up many roofs trying to do that.  :(

The diamonds and vents are correct for some of the early coaches but it would appear the later bothe were removed on some. If I was going to remove the diamonds I would get myself a quarter inch wood chisel and grind it down so that it would fit between the roof and the celestory overhand and gradually scrape it away. With the vents I would cut the section out totally and add more in then once it was all cleaned, sanded and painted with a primer I could then cast as many as I want.

Thanks for the kind words, guys. The diamonds were removed by using a chisel tip (#17) xacto blade and the side of a needle file. I shaved off the points of the diamonds and filed down the rest. You can still see remnants of them, but you'd have to be looking at them really close. It was arduous and I never want to do it again.

As far as the roof vents go, I didn't have to patch anything. I basically just sanded and filed them down. I was using Model Power and not Lima, so maybe that's a difference? To expedite things, I chipped away at them with a knife first and filed them down from there. That roof/window plastic is very brittle. I had an annoying time scraping off the molded on vents (the ones I replaced with pins). They would just chip off if I wasn't careful.

And Al, you know I'm cool with a B70 hijack! Just do it in a gradual way so we don't realize it until after it happens.  :trollface:

As far as my window/roof/underbody goes, they look ok? Are they the correct arrangements and parts?

Josh, what is the starting point for these coaches, again?  The Model Power ones?

I'm also a SPF, but have spent more time learning the freight side.  I did get a PRR branchline passenger shed today from SW, so I need to start learning the warm bodies side of things.

Since Alwyn knows so much about P70s...   :trollface:

Would clerestory roof P70s still be used in Middle Division trains by the 50s?  I'm thinking they'd be few and far between.  I wonder if I should convert mine to arch roof using http://www.prr-parts.com/Page2.html.

Everything I have found on P70's (plain P70)  suggest clerestory roofs. Again, some with the diamonds removed, some with the vestibule vents removed.
