Bachmann Tankcars

One of the new Bachmann triple-dome tanks arrived in the mail today, the all-black Philly Quartz scheme.  Very nice car.  I changed the couplers to Accu-Mates and the wheels to FVM, which I also did on their single-dome tank a few months ago.  The coupler pockets will take Accu-Mates and McHenry''s but not MTLs.  The single-dome appears to be a slightly-modified copy of the MTL car, but the triple-dome appears to be all-new.  They look good once the humongous couplers are changed out.

The new three dome looks like it could pass for the four PRR tank cars, TM8B, used to move lube oil around the system.  (see page 126 of the PRR Color Guide)

Thought it was interesting that Bmann lettered one 3-domer for California wineries, as most used the 6-dome tankers that Mark Watson rendered quite nicely.

Nice to see Bmann have better-quality rolling stock.
Part of the Bmann fun was to take their cheap-o stuff and turn it into something special (or, at least, usable).

Whomever starts making cheap undec basic car shapes with rivets is going to get my attention very quick.
Or maybe I should start figuring out how to make those rivets myself

It's specifically about the Chateau Martin cars.  They're former express reefers (wood and steel) and even 40' steel box cars installed with tanks just like the better known Linde Air Gas cars.  I think there's at least one photo of one of the purple steel express cars running in the early 70s on the page.

Thanks for the info on the reefers and tank cars.  Looks like NYC carried a lot of those and also the Erie.  Wonder how the one got to Baltimore (B&O or PRR).  The wooden cars hava a european looks with those roofs.  Also looks like then ran into the 70s.

I wish this were true because I happen to own an eye catching express reefer in Chateau Martin colors, but these cars are not former express reefers, that would imply 50' cars. They are/ were former 40' milk cars ; they only look like 50' express reefers because of their low slung profile and trucks. If there is evidence to the contrary, I'd love to be corrected...
