Maryland Midland ModelRailroader Track Plan

There's a track plan for a good sized room (11x18 but there's a 6x5 section cut-out) in the February, 2013, issue of Model Railroader on the Maryland Midland. It covers the full length of the line. It's a very well done track plan and article. For those that have a subscription, here's a link to it:

Too bad its "Subscriber-Only Content" but its only going to hurt themselves (the link is worthless if you are not a subscriber).  The change made by them to "Subscriber-Only Content" was reason enough for me not to subscribe any longer... 'course having only 5 out of the 12 issues for a year that were worth a hoot didn't help things either.  I pick and choose what issues I want and what magazines I buy... and am glad I save myself money when its an issue that isn't of interest to me.

Got the MR issue in the mail today...going to read the article before bed tonight.

Getting ready to "reboot" my Arkansas Midland RR in the coming days/weeks. Saw a new track design my David Smith that is ideal for the J&NW branch of the AKMD here in town. Getting some more ideas from DS and then the build will begin!

No...or at least not in the hard copy version.

The last paragraph says locomotives in the Maryland Midland paint schemes are hard to come by.

As for MMID locos there was a custom paint job some years ago, I am also aware that there was a company which made hoppers for MMID...
I bought my last copy of MR Magazine in 2009 and turned over to N Scale Magazine which gives me more information because MR has too much HO content...what does not mean that I do not like HO models..I have two HO locos, SD40-2 and a GP38-2 in MILW...

Trainworx has 100 ton quad hoppers available.  MBK had Atlas do 3 of their SD38-3's in the orange and blue scheme in N scale a few years back, very hard to find anywhere.  My LHS is in Blue Ridge Summit where MMID interchanges with CSX, they have 2 HO units for sale in case at the door, and I think they have HO decals available.

One slight correction, GP-38-3s. I wish somebody (ahem, Atlas) would do an SD-38 model, and or course, the evasive SD-40-2  .

I agree jmlaboda....I've been a subscriber since 1973 but I won't be renewing in July. The magazine steadily shrank from an average 140 pages to less than 100, with a few issues dropping below 90 pages. December issues were routinely nearly or over 200 pages. Content has slipped also. Of course there needs to be enough ' beginner' type how-to articles, but some get quite lame. I recall a 2 page spread last year (?) about cleaning paintbrushes. Really?

In regards to the article itself, it gives a good overview of the operations of the current MMD as well as how one could operate the layout itself as designed. The only thing that is missing is Westminster but there wasn't enough room to put it in between Union Bridge and Finksburg. It does talk to the GP38-3s but also talked if you were modeling older eras you could do GP9s or even the SD24s, FP7s and F7s. The article was written by Bob Sprague who some on this forming may know since he's from Alexandria.

Nothing elitist about it,If you buy the mag you should get access to the online stuff.They will only end up driving more buyers to other magazines.They make more money from my LHS purchase than they ever will from a subscription.

The MBK custom run was done by Shane and Ed K .. they are Atlas GP38-2s with the MMID paint scheme. They did a good job with them .. the Trainworx hoppers are wrong .. but close enough ..
