Really digging the water application. Save from my hand going numb, I could enjoy this all day.



Added some additional thickness in the channel. Wish it were faster to thicken the depth, but I guess I have the rest of my life!

I know model railroad space is always at a premium, but with the canal being so narrow, would it make sense to scale down the barges a bit?  The aerial shows the canal being 5 or 6 barges wide, and you can't get two side by side. 
Regardless of the proto navigation needs, it should look a little wider than it is.  Obviously now is not the time to change the canal itself, but perhaps tweaking the boats will improve the effect.

@wm3798 , I thought about this many times and the risk to the model, especially the one with the bow, would take a magnitude of work to do, and for the visual interest and some of the images shared in my other thread asking the question about this, I am comfortable with it. I think the stark white of the models makes them stand out unrealistically here as well. Also keep in mind that the waterfront has no true depth and is really the true "channel".  The small channel could simply be for water use, which happens to have one barge in it.

@Ed Kapuscinski thanks, I really like how the waves are coming out so far. Not sure if I want to add whitecap effects or not.  I almost wish the product didn't dry fully clear when its thick like the waves.  These waves are about 2 footers high, so some small rollers.  Maybe, and some algae helps make the foam as opposed to whitecaps.  hmmm.

Your harbor scene is looking good. To my minds eye, you can't have too many vessels in the scene. I've seen images of piers so packed with shipping, you would wonder how they could even move in and out.

Today I ballasted the interchange track down to the LIRR IS. The length along the berm wall is basically a gutter where I will place some cattails and have some standing water after the ballast dries.



Due to the gutters, I have added some spouts to empty into the channel.  The gloss medium is still drying.





The waterfront at the far sea wall is now complete and drying:



A wooden fence is built now for behind and under the truss system. Just behind that will be apartments stretching from the channel toward the left end of the layout. I still have to make much more fence.



I could not find any decals locally, but found some plain Roman dry transfer decals for the railroads own bridge. It needs some rust stains and such. The the bridges will be installed soon now that the channel is complete, except for some figures that will go in later.

Added the back fence under the PRR main which will mostly have apartments behind, pic is taken from the back edge of the layout The broken gate at the end is where the local hoodlums sneak in. This is where the West Side Story type “gang” fight will be, under the elevated trackage.





A view down the channel. Bridge install is next.



Also began some building construction kitbash flats and their placement; note the warehouse track entrance under the bridge. Thinking of placing a cut up box car there as a permanent fixture. What do you think?

A paved road will emerge from between the two flats and denigrate into a single lane road going toward the PRR freight station and LIRR enginehouse/office later.

Finally! Both the PRR and LIRR IS bridges are installed, completing the track install on the main side of the layout.







Added some more fence behind the elevated main, and a gap for the road under it. May install a gate, not sure. It is PRR property after all.



A look at the elevated truss end and it’s businesses.



Here is a look down the mainline. All of the flat structures are built, save one more apartment behind the red one.



Weathered a loading dock for the team track that @Philip H suggested earlier. The brand new replacement board already has a stain.

Looking for help or comments from the collective on building placement and overcrowding

I have been completing all of the base structures for the layout and I am looking for some feedback on placement.

On the west (left side of the canal there are several structures behind the elevated main, starting from left, a biz, next is a LIRR IS served place, and to its right are apartments, not much I can do with these flats.  In front of the main, but behind the PRR branch (yet to be named) is a hot rod garage, the white gas station appearing model, which is grandfathered on the PRR property/ROW. Imaginary, behind the enginehouse on the far side of the PRR branch, will be a small PRR freight station, yet to be designed.

At the front right land mass will be the aggregate dealer. I am trying to position the office/garage such that it won’t interfere with the dealers machinery, loading, etc.. the enginehouse has its own appended office and a sand bunker. Coal will be delivered over the fence and into the tender by the aggregate dealer next door.



On the east side of the canal and behind the berm are two more nebulous businesses. Starting from the left is the beach area which will have a small restroom/changing outbuilding. To its right will be the team track loading ramp, and to the right is the substation, which cannot move. At the front of the layout are the scrap dealers buildings. I may add some small served dealers at the right sidings.



The icehouse will be the only structure placed on the extension duckunder, and I will lay out the roads after I settle on the structure placement.

@davefoxx , agreed. This will be two track, single lane dirt roads. Parking areas will be gravel (fine ballast). I have a plan for their general routes and crossings that follow the general structure locations.

I do want to angle some of the positions for a better aesthetic.
