In the recent past, I've added a minute drop of lightweight oil around any moving parts in my Peco turnouts right before I start applying the glue mixture.
Seems to work just fine for me.

The Ice dock is cool idea for that space; I'd also consider a team track.  No fixed industrial infrastructure, able to take a ariety of cars, and allows for periodic resets of vehicles, figures etc.

Thanks @Philip H , I like the team track idea, but for a different location here, and I will have a road to get there. The extension above goes off to the lower right:

John,
If you are set on an ice platform you may want to take inspiration from a smaller platforms, like the ones in Wilkes-Barre or Elmira, vs the behemoths that populate the mainline.

For a long skinny industry a icing facility is a good fit.

Ok, so where is the layout set again?

Long Island close to NYC, along the water right?

How likely would an ice house be there? It's not like you're on a main through line there.

What about something like an ash disposal facility?

Or a freight house. Here's some inspiration from my layout.

John,
If you are set on an ice platform you may want to take inspiration from a smaller platforms, like the ones in Wilkes-Barre or Elmira, vs the behemoths that populate the mainline.

@Chris333 , @pjm20 , The idea is a single story atop three lengths of platform, i.e. selective compression.

@Ed Kapuscinski , aye, but that line tails under the flyover to Long Island points unknown. The railroad is a service industry. Say the PRR drops off seven reefers up on the LIRR IS interchange siding on the berm wall, to be delivered by the service somewhere east. The LIRR IS loco of the day goes up, grabs them, and needing an ice refresh, brings them down and pushes them through the platform for filling. Pulls them back out and shoves them on the right siding till it can go grab a few more to do the same. Imaginarily, the LIRR iS road switcher takes them to their destination. Later when the empties return they can be pushed back up to the PRR siding as empties for the PPR to pick up by the switching power.

Lol, I think I just sold myself on the ice platform.

That space is too thin for a freight house, besides, I still have other places to find service industry, so, like Philip, the freight house idea works nearby the team track.

Thanks all for the ideas, but more opinions on the catenary poles in the ballast are still desired, and thanks @Bendtracker1 !

Giant milestone for the layout today. Installed the first elevated truss mainline tracks and soldered them to the berm wall track. I had been dreading this step for a long time!

Next is the last section of elevated track, which includes the deck bridge over the curved siding.

Wow. After so very long…

Yesterday I added the final section of the elevated main trusses (that leads) to a fictitious bridge from Long Island into NYC (see original post).

Soldered it all together, feeders down through the left bridge abutment. Tested the power to the track and it is FINALLY complete after eight years, in all of its five feet of glory! Ballast on the berm is next, note all of the removable catenary, signal and substation power tower on the main.

Berm wall pre-soak ballast. How does it look? My first serious ballasting work.  :scared:
