When I drybrush a light color like that I use a piece of black paper to blot off the extra paint so I can see just how much paint I will be putting on.

Another thing I like is a touch of moss green near the water.

And keep in mind that the bridge in the pic is right up against the Mahoning River and all that lower brown is probably a result of the river flooding.

THIS.  That's mostly mud and mineral staining.  You'll want to look at other pictures for inspiration.  This is the wall for the Rockville flyover on the Enola side that Doug Nelson posted to the Railwire:

Chris, I haven't drybrushed since I was a kid so I'm way out of practice.  I thought that portal looked way too muddy.  Agree- high warter would do that.

STONEWORK

Plastruct 10085 or 85. - Vacuum formed, easily curved, must be backed up.

Ultimate Scenery System #4150 Penn/Central (?????) wall. Polyurethane foam, easily cut, bends with heat.

Chooch 8314 Cut Stone Medium Wall. Be sure and step down ends of retaining walls�no blunt ends. Add capstones from styrene, especially on Chooch walls.

Stonework Painting

Paint entire wall, portal, etc. with Floquil 84 foundation, let dry thoroughly.
Mix equal parts of Woodland Scenics Earth Color Liquid Pigment, C1222 Burnt Umber and C1221 Raw Umber. Brush on about 60% of the stones in a random pattern.
Take some of the 50/50 mix and add a little C1216 white. Paint a few random stones.
Do the same with C1219 Slate Grey, then do the same with C1229 Earth Undercoat.
When all stones are colored, white vertical lines can be added at lower corners of some stones with the C1216 White and a fine brush to simulate leaching out of lime from the mortar.

I was out searching the web for notches cut into tunnel portals yesterday when I stumbled upon this how-to for painting stone tunnel portals, walls, etc.

So I finally figured out a solution to my berm wall capstones.  I was dreading casting 70+ single rows of stone and painstakingly gluing each one to the top of the stone retaining walls.  Today it dawned on me that if I simply make a very thin casting, each individual stone will easily break at the mortar joint.   Each casting yields about 50+ stones.  Then I can simply glue it to a .125 x .125 piece of styrene and groove the top for mortar joints and wha-la!

Surprisingly, the strip is very flexible and will follow the berm wall nicely.

This is the reason I haven't posted in a while; I was struggling to finish the berm wall for a base primer coat and sorely needed a solution to the capstones....

Well it has been over a year since I worked on the LIRR IS because I became discouraged with the capstone solution above. I have since decided that it will be good enough.

I have taken advantage of some down time during a weeklong hospital stay with my daughter for EEG testing (nothing serious) by casting thousands of individual stones to be glued on the styrene strips. The strips will then be glued to the top of the walls.





I have also purchased ballast material and some structures to be used for a backdrop flat



I have decided that the crossover and switch to the LIRR IS off the PRR main should have a small interlocking tower located about here or a little farther down.



So I made this berm wall foundation extension for the tower.



So, at least monetarily, I am committed ( or should be!).

This is the first structure kitbash for the LIRR IS.  The model is a modified Bachmann kit to add an office off the side, and front arches cut out for locomotive entry. This will go on the double spur to the left.

I have only begun to weather and paint the building, but it is a start and more importantly a commitment.
