How Many Model Railroaders Have a Train Under Their Christmas Tree? After see Max's photo with the train under the tree. I was wondering how many Model Railroader that have a layout have a train under their tree? I like having a train under my tree because it brings back happy childhood memories. :)  Please forgive if I'm not PC.       Rich

Well, obviously I have one!  But I wanted to chime in here because of what you said about childhood memories.
I was born in '62, so I was not a child of the Lionel generation.

But I do have a lot of boyhood memories of my older brother's HO trains all through the time I was growing
up.  And when I struck out on my own, I started putting the Lionel set around the tree because
it *is* still magical to me, even though I never actually did that as a boy.

The sight of that train evokes a warm and whimsical feeling, truth be told, of a world I wish existed.

I got an Atlas Trainman GP15-1 set, was gonna put it under the tree, but the table the wife put our tree on isn't wife enough for the loop.  So probably gonna grab a 2x4 sheet of foam from storage and use that as a base.

My 8 year old grandson is bringing his 00 gauge Hornby 'Javelin' high-speed set to put under our tree on Christmas Eve.

Can't wait!

My media room...which is my train room, is directly beneath my living room...where the tree is.  So, technically, I have a railroad under the Christmas tree.

I have my g scale set running around the tree, the set is from when I was 10. Now it spends its time hauling barbies for my daughter.

We run a cheap set under the tree for the grandkids. It's one of those you get at the bargain stores and has the freelance box cars and caboose. I picked the set because it has a decent replica of a 4-6-2 marked for C&NW. The sound and lights make it a hit with the kids and it's rugged enough to withstand a set of 3 year old boys.

Christmas tree? Huh? What's that?  :?

No kids, so therefore no grandkids. We decided about 15 years ago that decorating for the holidays was 2 more projects (decorate, then undecorate) than we had time for. We have trouble enough keeping up with our regular, over-the-top sh..... uhhh... stuff.

Thought about it, even kept the circular plywood that was the middle of my helix to do it.  But,we figured the dog would knock it off the tracks continuously, and the LHS didn't have the requisite 19"R Kato unitrak I was looking for, so we scothed the plans for trains under our scotch pine.....

Still have a really great set of newer 3-rail stuff from K-Line and MTH for Christmas layouts on the living room floor (Warbonnet F-3's are a must!) but I've been in an apartment for the last couple years and grabbed a set of double track unitrack for a smaller Christmas layout.

This year I went a different route with an On30 outside frame 2-8-0 with a Tsunami sound decoder!   Sounds great!   Laid a loop of code 83 flex on some black foam-core board and it's lots of fun to have this chuffing away in the background.   (along with my son's Star Wars contributions to the holiday village...)   MUST have a train around the tree.

With both the boys grown and moved out and plus having 3 dogs and a cat I find it's just not worth doing a tree.  Beside I'll be spending Christmas day at my older boys house and he will have one.  Might just have to get a set for his tree.

As for Lional, even thou I am part of that generation I never cared much for Lionel stuff.  Always had an American Flyer under the tree when I was young.  It looked move realistic that Lionel to me.
