Iain,

The whiteboard, which may have been rendered in FUD and soaked in Bestine, describes the decay of quarks. Perhaps Gary could weigh in with a lecture or a powerpoint?

Okay....I guess it isn't funny if you have to explain.
This forum has a fair number of Male math, science, physics and technology nerds who can at times turn discussion about modeling into something that approaches the comprehensive exams given to graduate students. This thread on cleaning FUD is a good example....for example. Then, a Female joins the discussion with the nerds. This reminded me of television program with a similar theme. Thus, the photo. I should note that the science nerd in the photograph with the white board is also a train enthusiast on said program. See how funny it is once it it explained?!   :P

Best wishes, Dave

If you lend someone $20, and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

I thought it was pretty good.  You have to admit, this forum is pretty intense and expert on some threads.

That image gave me a flashback to Navy nuke school (over 30 years ago), staring wide eyed at a blackboard full of impenetrable equations that I'd have to know, inside and out, which I can't even remember today.

This thread reminds me of debates during long times at sea, arguing over esoterica of plant operation/theory and what is really going on.

You guys would have fit right in,
Bob

Yes! this forum most certainly is full of expert threads and observations. honestly, you guys may know a bit more than I do.

What I can say, is that after a few days of experimenting with Bestine and reviewing what you all have to say... I've just become more confused. The thing is, that the FUD crystal  IS naturally transperant - and I have found a solvent that can remove all the wax and oil, WITHOUT the whitening effect. I cannot use it due to it toxicity at this point. So, when it comes to the bestine- why exactly it has the effect of turning the plastic white, since its clearly not just dehydrating it of the wax and other slime. After running some tests, it doesnt seem to be making the plastic more brittle, either. So what is the bestine doing to the plastic to turn it white? And why do so many other solvents have this whitening effect as well?

Also- I have tried a water pick. This was almost the answer- except the water would hit the plastic and fly back in my face :( I am totally willing to get a little water on myself for the quality of your models though :) I really do care. Really!

I will keep searching and keep reading until I find the right solution. I will also do my best to respond more promptly - now that thigns have slowed down post holidays- I can really take the time to respond to all of you.

Have a merry Christmas!!! XO!

Katfudgirl,
I'm going out on a limb here (since I have no scientific proof other than my experience with one RP object) and say that Bestine simply removes *ALL* of the wax/oil  from the resin surface where whatever you currently use to clean the FUD objects doesn't.

As the photos I posted earlier show (along with the detailed description), some surfaces of the object (which were printed without being in contact with wax) remain translucent after being cleaned, while other areas of that same object become white.  It is all the same resin on the same object, exposed to the same chemical rinse. So I don't think that Bestine is changing the surface of FUD.

If we had someone with a high power microscope I highly suspect that under extreme magnification the white areas would show up as very rough (but still translucent) surfaces.  That roughness scatters light making them appear white. If any wax remains in those areas, it fill the low spots in the rough surface making it smooth. That results in less light being scattered by those surfaces making them appear translucent.  That is my belief, until someone can prove to me that something else is going on.

A possible way to determine if the surface of a heptane cleaned FUD object was still "clear", would be to immerse it in a liquid with a similar refractive index, which should make it appear transparent, I think (if I remember my mineralogy from decades ago).

Of course, the way things have been going with this thread, that liquid would probably, and ironically, be some type of molten wax. : )

Can you tell us what the toxic chemical is that left the models clear?

I am wondering what would happen it you printed a part without the wax support?  If the FUD is cured instantly does it really need support? I mean if the part will fall over yeah, but if most FUD resolution problems happen when it touches the wax, lets get rid of the wax. 3D designers could add thin support frames that could easily be removed.

BTW I got my order in the mail today. The packaging seems a little bit different. None of my stuff was broken so that was a plus.  :)

My order was for some N scale caboose trucks and for a small items like this I think they come out great. All the detail can be seen.  I just wish that larger items could look as good.

If you ever solve this problem, the world will be a better place, because once you clean him up he looks pretty good:

Hey all,

just wanted to share a few of my trains on Shapeways, they haven't got any overhanging parts and thus no support material on the outside of the model :)

And without lots of details, WSF works out great as well :-) (note i didnt paint the model)

cheers,
Mitchell

edit:
additional note to all Europeans, SW got 2 FUD prints in their Eindhoven office, so there is a possibility that it will be printed out there instead of at Katfudgirl post processing them :)

thanks!

so i make my trains in FUD and design a chassis in FUD which consists holes that can hold 2 Tomytec TM04 (i think its 04) bogeys.

cheers,
Mitchell
