I finally got back to some modeling and got a good start on Milwaukee Road Erie built 8A.

Oh, an early Eriebuilt, nice work chopping it. Did you start with the LL shell?

Good eye Jason.
Yes, this is the V-line shell that's been around a while.
The Lifelike shell nose geometry is different and possible more correct
but the V-line just looks more "right" to me for the earier E/Bs with the stepped
roof and rectanglar windshields. I also haven't been able to bring myself to
start cutting on my LL shells. (yet)
Dan Lewis did an article in MR several years ago on modifying the V-line shells.

Skytop,
Great model. Smells like, Tastes like, must be a Erie Built. I have three A-B-A sets of the V Line Model and I am happy. Just picked up a powered set in PRR DGLE with roof antennae the other day for $60.00 and even with the Con Cor PA Mechs they run just fine. I must admit the LL models run superb. At one point in time JnJ Hobbies did a model of the Milwaukee Road Erie built 8A. with the modified roof. Never got one though as it is not my road. Great modelling.

I wish LL would re-issue the Erie builts, but I doubt that will happen anytime soon.  Time to lurk on ebay, I guess.  There's a photo in Pennsy Power II of them hauling a coal drag near their end of life, that I'd like to have on my layout.

They Are C-Liners

They still look good... They're FM's. I never even knew those V-line shells existed, but it does have a better feel to it for the early production models of Erie's. Personally I never liked the shape of the windshield, and always found the later version of the Erie-Built to look more appealing.

I wouldn't cut up any LL shells that are already painted, unless they happen to be Santa Fe, then have it .

It sounded like a good idea at the time... too bad the caboose wasn't in on the plan.

Addendum to mainline radius easement:  After running my longest motive power through the new 16" r curve with no problems, it kept derailing at low speed when going over the hidden staging yard switches (old Rapido remotes that I got for free).   So today a friend came over, works near the LHS so he picked up some new switches and flex, and we replaced the entries into the staging.  Since I opened up the scenery a bit to make things easier, we decided to make the staging tracks longer, so now they'll be 7' to 6'6"., adding about 2.5' to them.

The Kato E8 made it through the new switches with no problem, but there was another problem  in the tunnel at the other end.  A joint in the flextrack, about a 22" r had a slight under gauge, enough to derail the long EMD only going in one direction.  Again, luckily, there is a large industry over the tracks, so I was able to use a hole cutter in the drill to cut an opening and spike that track into gauge.

Beer time.

Those PRR FM units pictured are C-Liners, not Erie-Builts - just in case there is any confusion.

First pass scenery is in on my PRSL Woodbury modules. ("FIRST PASS!" - the Dave Volmer memorial sidewalks have yet to be added.) These are a few of the scenes I am attempting to re-create. Buildings are all stand-ins. A long ways to go. The proto photos are from Images of America - Woodbury and Long/Coxey.
