How do these engines stack up? Are they as good as  the Kato engines

Better in detail, at least equal in running in my opinion. They do have more chances for inconsistancy in build quality because there are more parts...photo etch grills, wipers, grabs, etc.

The IM FP7's I have and the B units are some of my best runners. Great slow speed performance and they are consistant runners. They look great, better detail than kato.
Model railroading isn't saving my life, but it's providing me moments of joy not normally associated with my current situation..... Train are good!

I like the IM F7's.  Kinda hefty and seem to run a little slower.

The only issue I had was a couple of them losing part of their windshield.

But a call to IM had replacements on their way in no time.

They sit like 4x4's, but you can lower the shell on the frame with just a little bit of work to make them look right.

I love my WP FP7 and wish I could find a pair of F7Bs to replace the Kato F3A&B I'm running the CZ with.  They simply cannot run together, speed differences are to great.
Can't model worth a darn, but can research like an SOB.

Flagler, I have an AB pair of  C&O F's running on the shop layout at Trainmaster Models, that have been running for over 2500-3000 hours right now and have only been lubed. They pull well and run very smoothly. Go check them out next time you are in.

I have a Southern Pacific Black Widow A-B--B-A on order. This will be nice addition to my Roster. I will wait on the ATSF Cigar Bands

+1.  I think they run better than the Kato F's.  I have 3 A/B sets with Digitrax DCC boards, and the swap is much easier and more reliable owing to IM having a far superior frame+board design than Kato.

I have a dozen F-7, FP-7, and F3.  all are DCC and all run very well together.  Slow speed performance is excellent and pulling power is very good.

I will be thinning the herd soon as I realized I really don't need a dozen.

All are SP Black Widow or SP Bloody Nose.

best runners on my layout, except maybe for the Atlas Trainmasters.   IM got all the F's, wish they would take some of their 40 and 45 series SD units and fill in the missing holes.
