Athearn Mack B Tractors: Were They Around in 1971?

I just won 18 Athearn 40' trailers on ebay. Now, I need the tractors to pull them. Were the Mack B tractors common in 1971?

If not, who makes tractors that are appropriate for my era?

The Mack B was produced until 1965 when it was replaced with the Mack R.

Depending on the trucking company, but many would have still been in service in 1971.

Bs would be only 7 years old at their youngest. I think they stopped production in 63/64. There would be plenty around. In fact, many lasted well into the 1980's before tougher smog laws started requiring major modifications to older trucks when being rebuilt. there was a huge drop of lagacy equipment in the early to mid 90's.

You can still find a few today, but they are usially registered as antiques or used in captive service like parking lot snow removal or off road logging.

The Mack B Model were made between 1953 and 1966, and a lot of them were made. With an average life span of 10 to 20 years for a truck in 1971 they should be fairly  common.      Rich

A company I worked for was using a Mack B for local trips almost into the 90's..

Kiz, there are a couple companys here in West Michigan still using a few of the B's. These are rather nicely restored but still working every day.

This page shows several Mack Model B trucks in service well after 1971.

The actual production dates for the Model B has varied over time.  When Athearn announced the models in 2006, Mack’s website stated the Model B was first produced in 1949 and remained in production until 1965.  Many truck fans took exception to the 1949 date since the early registrations dated back to only 1953.

A quick check of the current information on Mack’s website states:  “The B series, introduced in 1953, was surely one of Mack's most successful and popular products. Its pleasing, rounded appearance set a new styling standard for trucks, as did the wide range of model variations offered. There are B models still in active service today, part of the 127,786 built through 1966.”

Mack’s website also states the Model R replaced the Model B in 1966.  In any case, there would have been a lot of those 127,786 Mack Model B trucks still on the road in 1971.

When I joined NJ Kenworth in 1971 there was a company in Bound Brook, NJ that was solid B models. When I left Kenworth in 1980 they were still a Mack B model fleet. Company was Apgar Trucking. Bob.

Ah, one of the few trucks I actually know and recognize.

I came across one as the 'donkey' at the ATSF piggyback (circus) ramp at Flagstaff in 1981 and got photos of it, have one of the cast metal models (Showcase??) for the version on my layout.  It was painted white and shows up in a lot of old photos of the area of the depot.

The Showcase Mack B may be a good alternative, I certainly think so.

We had a house mover here in western PA that showed up, with of all things, a small fleet of Mack B's - about five years ago, to move a house over by a block.  He had like three of them, I got photos.  They were lovingly restored, like museum pieces.   Have color shots of those too.

So while I haven't seen any around lately, like Monty Python says 'I'm not dead yet!'

That new Showcase IH tractor that is being introduced in cast metal is another cantidate, I'll be getting some of those for my '72 era.
