Let's see your Unusual Rolling Stock

I've always been a bit of a freight car foamer (http://canadianfreightcargallery.ca is my web site) so in the spirit of the unusual motive power thread (https://www.therailwire.net/forum/index.php?topic=27835.0) let's see some examples of oddball rolling stock (freight, passenger, MOW, cabooses, etc.).

Even though this still needs to run through the paint shop, I'll start with this rebuilt CP 40' high-cube appliance service boxcar. A high-cube boxcar for appliance service is in itself pretty standard, but this car wasn't originally built that way...

This is based on a prototype car rebuilt by Canadian Pacific in 1980:

Looks good, Chris. I knew what you were building before I read the first word of your post... that is too obviously one of CP's hatchet jobs. They had a few different home raised boxes, IIRC, including the butchering of those wonderful pine tree newsprint cars.

Straight side fixed end 50' Gondola.  One combination MTL doesn't do.  It doesn't show in the picture, but is has Pullman ends from a MTL box car.

Ex-RI Steel Rebuilt Box Car.  It's an Atlas car with an Intermountain Panel Roof and MTL running board.  Also redid all the brake gear to what it would have been in the 60's

CGW articulated flat car for service at John Deere.  Basically two cars permanently coupled.

CGW Pullman Standard NE5 caboose.  Looking to modify the file for Mark4 and finally have a CGW caboose after 20 years of modeling it.

DUPX 50' airslide.  Will probably redo this when the BLMA car comes out (it's a bigger capacity car than the BLMA one).

Extraordinary work, as always. Thanks for sharing. I'm hoping to accomplish and unusual project. Actually having a model railroad in the next year.

Great work everyone. I have but this one modest model to offer. These were used to ship pipe manufactured by AO Smith from Humboldt Yard on the Beer Line. Similar peek-a-boo gondolas were used in pulp wood service as well.

Best wishes, Dave

Here are three scratchbuilt Borden's butterdish cars that I built a few years ago.  The core is laminated acrylic stock with a half round on top then wrapped in Evergreen .010 sheet. A full write-up of their construction with in-progress photos is in the March 2003 RMC.

The white car is the earliest version and is based upon a car that resides at the Illinois Railway Museum in Union, IL.

The red car is the next generation paint scheme.

The silver car is the final version with the decorative fins removed and converted to chemical hauling.

Finally, a milk tank rig that is a brass import that hangs out with my butterdish cars.

Best regards,

Roger

that thar is a thing o beauty.
damn!

it looks like what railroads do and is unique.
If MT made the exact same thing (any mass production)
it would not be the same.  you have to make it yourself for it to be right
and If I ever get around to making something like it
I hope mine is half as good

That's really cool.  But what the heck is an Air Repeater car?  Did Soo have airbrake system problems or something?

I like the unusual.  To support my new pickle industry, I scratch-built three pickle cars I found while Googling.  Another car I stumbled across Googling was an "ice car" I just had to have.
