LAS VEGAS - Visitors to MINExpo in Las Vegas last month got to see a unique sight, a brand-new Electro-Motive Diesel SD70ACe in Caterpillar yellow in CAT's 52,000-square foot exhibit. Now you can see a video that EMD's parent company, Progress Rail, produced to show how the unit moved from Union Pacific rails, down the world famous strip, and into the showroom.
The 2-minute, 15-second video includes an overview of the 4,400-hp freight locomotive and scenes showing it moving through the city under a tarp by truck. The the video shows how cranes lowered it onto panel track inside the display hall. The unit demonstrates Caterpillar's role in mining worldwide, and locomotives are in this service in the U.S., Canada, South America, the Middle East, Australia, and Africa.
The locomotive features a 16-cylinder 710-engine, EM2000 microprocessor control system, and alternating current traction motors. It made its public debut last Saturday at the opening of Caterpillar's new visitors' center in Peoria, Ill. The unit is also set to pull a Norfolk Southern train of export products to Savannah, Ga., on Wednesday.
The video is available on the Progress Rail web site at
